במענה למכתבו מיום ג' בו שואל ע"ד מנהגי חסידים, הטעמים להם, המקור וכו'.
ומובן וגם פשוט שאין לענין זה מקום במכתב, ובפרט שאין צורך בזה כיון שבמחנו נמצאים כמה חסידים, נוסף על הספרים שכבר נדפסו בענינים כאלו, וידבר עם החסידים אשר במחנו ויעיין בספרים האמורים, וימצא מבוקשו.
ואנצל הזדמנות זו לעוררו אשר החסידות היא חלק מתורתנו תורת חיים, וכמו שבכל התורה כולה הודיעו רז"ל שאפשרי לקבל רק ע"י הקדמת נעשה לנשמע וכמ"ש תומת ישרים תנחם וסלף בוגדים ישדם (שבת פח, א) עיין שם, וכן הוא בהנוגע לכל חלקי תורתנו, חלק הפשט, חלק הרמז, חלק הדרוש וחלק הסוד. ורק לאחרי הקדמה זו מצליח השי"ת שבאים להאופן דתומת ישרים תנחם.
תקותי שיש לו קביעות בלימוד תורת החסידות, וידוע פתגם רבנו הזקן וגם הוראה שקביעות צריכה להיות לא רק בזמן כי אם גם בנפש והוא העיקר, וכידוע הפסק דין דקבוע לא בטיל.

In response to your letter from Tuesday in which you ask about chassidic customs, their reasons, sources, etc. It is clear and simple that this matter does not belong in a letter—especially since it is unnecessary because there are several chassidim in our camp, in addition to books already published on these topics. Speak with the chassidim in our camp and study the aforementioned books, and you will find what you seek.
I take this opportunity to remind you that chassidus is a part of our Torah, the Torah of life. Just as throughout the entire Torah our Sages taught that one can only receive by first saying 'Naaseh v'Nishma' ("We will do and we will hear") as it says 'Tumas Yesharim Tanchem v'Selef Bogdim Yeshadem' ("The integrity of the upright guides them, but the perverseness of traitors destroys them") (Shabbos 88a)—see there—so too regarding all parts of our Torah: pshat (simple meaning), remez (allusion), drush (homiletics), and sod (secret). Only after this introduction does Hashem grant success to reach the state of 'Tumas Yesharim Tanchem' ("The integrity of the upright guides them").
I hope you have a set time for studying Chassidus; it is known that the Alter Rebbe said—and also instructed—that this regularity should be not only in time but also in soul—and this is most important—as is known from the halachic ruling that something fixed cannot be nullified.
