Wedding Timing, Expenses, and Parental Travel Considerations

The Rebbe advises that weddings should ideally not be held on Sunday and questions the need to imitate local customs. He suggests minimizing wedding expenses and guests, using funds for better purposes, and considers parental travel only as a suggestion for both sides to discuss.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

... Regarding the manner of the wedding: it is preferable that it not take place on Sunday, and until when will the Jewish people continue to imitate the customs of other countries? Likewise regarding the wedding in terms of excessive expenses and many guests—even if there are no financial limitations, it is possible to use this money for even better causes. Our Sages explained that a great feast is one where the Master of the Universe is present; when everything is done with proper care and there is an awakening towards Torah and mitzvos—especially to build a Jewish home in all its chassidic details—certainly the Master of the Universe will be present and will bestow His blessing in every detail.

From the above my view is also understood regarding one of the parents traveling here: such a trip involves great expense, and it would be possible for the young couple to use this money for an even better purpose.

It is also understood that my words regarding a parent's trip here, as well as regarding how to hold the wedding, are only suggestions for both sides to consider and decide together; whatever they decide should be with success and at an auspicious time.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned matters as well as in general matters.

Summary

The Rebbe encourages thoughtful decisions about wedding timing and expenses, suggesting moderation and prioritizing meaningful values over imitation or extravagance. He emphasizes unity between families in decision-making and wishes blessings for success in all areas.
