בפרטיות אויף אייניגע רעיונות פון אייער בריף, איז דא בייגעלייגט דער קובץ ליובאוויטש, און אין מערערע פון די מילי מעלייתא וועט איר געפינען דעם ענטפער אויף דעם, ובעיקר ולכל לראש כנ"ל, אז יעדער זאך ומח' וואס עס שטערט צו מעשה בפועל, איז דאס ניט פון צד הטוב וכו'.
ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 15th of Elul, in which you write a bit of a cheshbon hanefesh (spiritual accounting), or as you express it, an inventory. As was also discussed at the farbrengen on Chai Elul, based on the words of my father-in-law the Rebbe, from Chai Elul begin the days of accounting—a day for each month of the past year.
However, it is well known—the foundation of Chassidus and also a law in Torah—that avodah (Divine service) must be done with joy and gladness of heart. And since cheshbon hanefesh is also one of the ways to serve Hashem, it too must be done with joy and gladness. The main point—as my father-in-law the Rebbe says in the name of his father the Rebbe—is to know from which side an issue comes, as printed in Hayom Yom for 23 Sivan.
Regarding some specific ideas from your letter: I have attached Kuntres Lubavitch, and in several of its fine points you will find answers to your questions—especially and above all as mentioned before: that any matter or thought that hinders action is not from the good side, etc.
As we approach the new year that is coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing, I hereby express my blessing to you and all yours: a blessing for being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year materially and spiritually.
