Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the end of Tammuz—which was somewhat delayed—in which you write about the situation in your family life and your relationship with your wife, may she live.
It is already well known what our Sages teach regarding one's wife, the wife of one's youth, as it is written: 'Eshet Ne'urim Ki Timas?!' ("The wife of one's youth—should she be despised?!"). Especially when Hashem has blessed you with children being raised in the path of Torah and mitzvah, it is understood from all this that divorce, G‑d forbid, is only a very last resort—only after one has made the greatest effort to bring peace in accordance with the guidance of our Torah, a Torah of life and peace. As you describe in your letter, it seems you have significant influence over your wife; however, until now—apparently due to preoccupation with work and similar matters—you have not truly tried or at least not invested the necessary thought into finding suitable ways to exert this influence. Therefore, you have not succeeded as much as possible. Based on the above, every effort and attempt is worthwhile—especially since through this she will also be drawn closer and brought into a life according to Torah step by step—not just for the sake of not separating but gradually even through a change in her perspective. Of course, there are special situations according to Torah that require separation, G‑d forbid—but this is only considered after clear proof that change is impossible.
If you write your name and your mother's name as well as your wife's name and her mother's name and their children’s names, may they live—I will mention them at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal.
It is appropriate for you to keep the practice of reciting a daily portion of Tehillim as divided for each day of the month—after morning prayers—and on every weekday before prayer to set aside some coins for charity.
Blessings for good news in all mentioned above,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true peace in marriage requires persistent effort and spiritual dedication. Divorce should only be considered after all avenues for reconciliation are fully explored. Consistent prayer and charity help strengthen family unity.
