B"H, on the first day of the week of Parshas Hen Am Levadad Yishkon, 5717.

Brooklyn, NY.

To the participants in the annual conference of the Union of Rabbis, may Hashem be upon them for life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your notification regarding your annual gathering on Monday and Wednesday of this week, may it be successful. May it be G‑d's will that, with His help, your gathering will be for the sake of Heaven and bring real fruits and tangible results in strengthening traditional Judaism and spreading it in holy communities and institutions where members of your union serve in sacred roles—and everywhere your influence reaches—spreading traditional Judaism so thoroughly that it becomes decisive and dominant in public and private Jewish life.

The role and responsibility of rabbis today is not like that of rabbis in previous generations. In our times—days of concealment and confusion—rabbis must declare and repeatedly declare: "This Torah is transmitted from the Creator Himself; from no other. Nothing can be added or subtracted—not in the Written Torah nor in the Oral Torah." The core of the Oral Torah is Israel's judges—the pillars of instruction—who established ordinances, decrees, and customs for the public (see Rambam Hilchos Mamrim at its beginning), which is a foundation of our faith. What was forbidden by Torah long ago remains forbidden now—even in America—and even if someone invents one hundred fifty reasons to permit something (Eruvin 13b; see there), the prohibition stands strong.

This responsibility has grown even more urgent in recent years as G‑d has mercifully inspired many young people to seek true authenticity. Some have already found truth—our Torah of truth—to the point of changing their daily lives; some are moving in this direction but have not yet reached their goal; some feel lost without any support or foundation for life—and they await someone to explain their situation and guide them into light.

The common denominator among these three groups is that their eyes are turned toward their rabbi and leader—to teach them truth as it is: a complete Torah without compromise. Every compromise is rooted in falsehood and is itself falsehood. This awakening increases every rabbi's responsibility many times over—especially for young rabbis who grew up in the same environment as those seeking truth. It is their duty and privilege to show authentic Judaism without compromise—as Shulchan Aruch instructs at its start: "Do not be embarrassed before those who mock."

Nor should one fear the familiar claim that "the entire congregation is holy" so there should be no divisions between different religious movements—even when one movement changes Torah law. The halachic ruling is clear: such a group is not a movement within Judaism but one fighting against Moshe's faith, increasing heresy among Jews.

This is an opportune time—a call to strengthen Torah foundations and mitzvos in purity—for great power lies in teshuvah and awakening among Bnei Yisrael. Heaven forbid to ignore returnees or push them off with delays or disappoint them with compromises! Every day and week that passes without action not only fails to correct but causes destruction—for from a rabbi's conduct, community members learn about Torah's value; a rabbi must bear its banner.

The reason for a rabbi's silence makes no difference—whether out of fear for livelihood, honor, or attendance numbers—because silence is interpreted as agreement with opposing views: lowering Torah from its holiness to fit time and place—a path that has led (and still leads) step by step toward Conservatism, Reform, assimilation, G‑d forbid.

A rabbi's essence and strength lie in being a messenger—to transmit Daas Torah as handed down by pillars of our tradition from Moshe at Sinai—a messenger of Hashem Himself. A faithful messenger does not alter his mission; he possesses his sender's power—as our Sages say: "A person's agent is like himself," alluding above even higher—to "the Man upon the throne," who says to every worthy student: "And I will place My words in your mouth." A messenger who alters his mission acts on his own willpower alone—the power of flesh—and about him it says: "And what advantage does man have..."

If someone calls himself a rabbi or shepherd among Jews but acts otherwise—what answer will he give to G‑d through His prophet: "You eat the fat... you clothe yourselves with wool... you do not heal the sick... you do not bind up the broken... you do not bring back those driven away... you do not seek out the lost... they became food for every beast" (Yechezkel 34:3-5).

May it be G‑d's will that your gathering succeed—to inspire, strengthen, and encourage all members of your union and all rabbis—that despite external or internal pressures they fulfill their rabbinic role completely without distortion or delay. Through fulfilling this mission with Torah's power—and He alone rules over all—they will establish holy communities among Israel and lead them upward toward Beis El with abundance until fulfillment of "I will set up one shepherd over them who shall feed them—My servant David."

With honor and blessings for success in sacred work—to strengthen Toras Emes (the true Torah), Hashem's eternal truth—and spread it everywhere.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that rabbis must stand firm for authentic Torah values without compromise or fear. Their leadership shapes Jewish life; only unwavering truth brings lasting impact on individuals and communities seeking meaning today.
