Mr. Yitzchak Damiel.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I have just received your letter from the bright day of Lag BaOmer, and I was so astonished by its content that I must reply immediately, out of order. What surprised me most is your intention to interpret my approach as if I am not pleased with your teaching and influence on your students—and even more surprising and distressing is your thought to stop this work.

All of this is truly astonishing, for my approach is well known to all and is the exact opposite of your conclusion. My words have been stated repeatedly: in our times it is incumbent upon everyone to utilize every opportunity and channel to spread matters of Judaism everywhere and in every circle and environment—practical guidance, opinions, and worldview in the spirit of traditional Judaism.

It is obvious that this includes the daughters of Israel—with special emphasis—since they are the builders of Jewish homes. Their education and influence determine whether they will be the foundation or G‑d forbid uprooters of the home; this affects generations upon generations. Especially regarding you, who has seen success in this field and has awakened their hearts—how can you consider stopping?

As for what you concluded in your letter by quoting "Yoshev Badad Veyidom, Yiten BaAfar Pihu" ("Let him sit alone and be silent; let him put his mouth in the dust"), this is completely inappropriate here. As I have already said humorously—but there is a deep point here—the matter of negating evil alone existed even before creation; all descent from a high place to a low one is for the sake of positive action specifically.

Accordingly, it is also understood as explained in Chassidus that the main thing is positive commandments (mitzvot aseh), while negative commandments (mitzvot lo ta'aseh) only prepare a person and things for drawing down light through mitzvot. The two verses you mention are recited on Tisha B'Av—a day of destruction and darkness—not during building and light, which is our task.

As known from the saying of the tzt"z: "Anan poalei dimama anan—machen lichtik" (We are workers of the day—we make things bright).

I am sending this letter quickly and urgently, expecting good news from you—that your last letter was written under a passing mood which has now gone without leaving any trace.

With honor and blessings for success in bringing close the hearts of Jews to our Father in Heaven—in such a way that "the heart will be divided among all limbs," so that from heart-felt emotion it will extend into all 248 limbs of the soul through fulfilling 248 positive mitzvot, and into all 365 sinews through observing 365 negative mitzvot (see Tanya ch. 51; Likkutei Torah Nitzavim 45:3 on "Tamim Tiheyeh").

For only good news as above,
M. Schneersohn

P.S.: Enclosed is a copy of my general letter for Pesach and for Nshei Chabad, where my view on these matters is also emphasized.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one must never withdraw from influencing others positively—especially in Jewish education—and should use every means available to spread Judaism with warmth and dedication. Even moments of doubt should not deter us from our vital mission.
