Shalom u'Vrachah!

In due time I received your letter in which you describe the Yud-Tes Kislev farbrengen, the Rosh Hashanah of Chassidus, your inner struggle in preparing for this bright day, and that in your opinion not everything planned was realized, etc. I will not hide that it pleased me to read about your struggle in preparing for the farbrengen according to our Sages' well-known saying: "If you did not toil and found [success], do not believe it." If this is true regarding personal matters, how much more so when it concerns the public and a day that is not private but general and the head of the entire year, as with this day. It is also understood that a lack of complete satisfaction from how the farbrengen went should not be taken to heart; on the contrary—until the time comes about which it is said "then our mouths will be filled with laughter," there is no perfection in this world. Anyone who claims to have complete satisfaction from any matter of holiness is either deceiving himself or others, or it does not concern his G‑dly soul but rather his animal soul—or even less than that—and this is clear.

Regarding what you wrote about there not being much success at the farbrengen, etc.—the reports I received from others were quite the opposite: success, inspiration, and uplifted spirits. As for your comment that no new public study groups in Chassidus were established through the farbrengen—sometimes a farbrengen has its effect in other ways. Furthermore, even when a farbrengen is completely successful, work is still needed to bring resolutions into daily life; if there is something lacking here, then that's where the deficiency lies—not in the farbrengen itself.

It goes without saying that after all of the above I do not mean to say there was no possibility for an even more perfect and desirable farbrengen—only to emphasize that there is nothing here that should cause discouragement or feelings like those you describe in your letter: fleeing from such matters and being only a listener or recipient. Besides this being contrary to our holy Torah's great principle "Love your fellow as yourself," it also contradicts our era's special directive—especially in Eretz HaKodesh—to spread the wellsprings outward. Anyone privileged to taste Chassidus must do so at every opportunity—and even create opportunities if they seem lacking—and this is clear.

I strongly hope these few lines will suffice to uproot entirely the idea you wrote about—of withdrawing from involvement. Although it is known that one cannot be a mashpia without first being a recipient, nevertheless people like yourself and in your position must be mashpi'im—specifically to many—not only guiding in Chassidic conduct but also teaching Chassidic teachings themselves. They are assured success in their holy work—even if reward does not always come immediately.

I hope you also utilized Pesach days and these intermediate days accordingly; may Hashem grant you and your wife success to increase such activities so that G‑d's blessings increase both personally and centrally—to raise all your children for Torah, marriage under the chuppah, and good deeds with Chassidic light and vitality.

Blessings for good news.

P.S. Surely you participated in recent Anash gatherings; may you share good news about them as well.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that dissatisfaction with spiritual efforts can be positive motivation for growth. He urges proactive involvement in spreading Chassidus and stresses that everyone who has tasted its teachings must become an active mashpia for others.
