Overcoming the Yetzer Hara’s Discouragement in Torah and Mitzvos

The Rebbe writes that feelings of discouragement and inadequacy in Torah and mitzvos are tactics of the yetzer hara. One must not heed these thoughts, but instead increase in Torah study and mitzvah observance, trusting in G-d’s help and seeking guidance from friends.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 29th of Kislev, in which you write that you reflect on your situation, make a personal accounting, and see deficiencies and shortcomings regarding your learning and conduct, among other things.

It is well known that one of the tactics of the yetzer hara is to cast upon a Jew a frightening sense of lowliness, saying it is extremely difficult for you to succeed in Torah and mitzvos. The proof: what happened on a certain day or during a certain night. When he sees that his argument is accepted, he begins to speak to the person's heart: since you are not succeeding anyway, why should you even try (G‑d forbid)?

Since this is one of the tactics of the yetzer hara, it is clear that one should not listen to its words at all. Instead, explain to yourself: it is true that until now I have not succeeded as required or as desired. However, the Creator and Ruler of the world has promised every single Jew that "no one will be cast away from Him." Therefore, I must continue on the path that leads to Beis El by increasing my Torah study and observance of mitzvos. Even if I sometimes stumble on this path, this should only strengthen my courage, diligence, and additional strength in the battle against the yetzer hara. For surely the Creator watches over me with individual Divine Providence and has promised everyone that when a person sanctifies himself a little below, he is sanctified much more from Above.

He should ask one of his friends from Tzeirei Agudas Chabad to explain this matter at greater length according to what is explained in Chassidus—among other places in Sefer HaTanya.

The main thing is that he should continue learning with diligence and perseverance; then Hashem will grant him success so that he will ultimately win his battle with the yetzer as well.

Certainly you keep the custom to say each day after morning prayers the daily portion of Tehillim for the month—as Tehillim has been divided according to the days of the month.

Blessings for good news,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that discouragement about spiritual progress comes from the yetzer hara. Instead of giving in to these feelings, one should persistently increase Torah study and mitzvah observance with trust in G‑d’s help and seek support from friends.
