Shalom u'Vrachah!
Your letter from the second day of Chanukah was finally received, though even in it there is no explanation for your prolonged silence. May it at least be a good beginning to inform me of good news regarding both general and personal matters.
As you requested, I will mention all those you wrote about at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal.
It seems from the lack of information that our Anash did not utilize at all the recent auspicious days—not even to a small degree compared to what is possible during such times in general, and especially this year when recent events have stirred many among Bnei Yisrael to awaken toward Hashem and even toward His Torah and mitzvos.
As I have written several times, I do not know what more I can do about this, since it seems people are stubbornly refusing to act in spreading the wellsprings. They limit themselves and lower themselves to the level of plant life—G‑d forbid—which cannot move beyond the few inches its roots spread. The darkness is so great that they do not even feel their state—while learning about the four types in creation: mineral, plant, animal, and human. The purpose of plant life is to be elevated into animal life, which has an added quality—it moves from its place to a new place and fulfills its role there as well. But even this is not enough; one must rise to the level of human. And even that is insufficient because one must be a 'mehalech'—one who progresses without limitation.
They do not sense their situation: they are immersed not only with most of themselves but entirely in the smallest bodily matters and those of their animal soul (as the Alter Rebbe says: bodies are divided and have no connection to another's body). When asked to divert their attention—even briefly—from their own bodily concerns and take an interest in illuminating their surroundings and their portion in this world—even though there is no immediately visible material reward—the words are not accepted at all.
When there is no way to evade this responsibility, they gather together (and apparently consider it self-sacrifice) a few people; each offers his opinion which contradicts that of another. Then each declares he cannot accept responsibility; on the other hand, there is no one else to rely on because everyone is full of shortcomings and cannot accomplish anything. "What do I have to do with all this? I saved myself—I came to the meeting; I heard what others had to say—even if they don't reach my ankles—what more am I obligated to do?" Thus he can also be called a recluse—a person of stature—as our Sages say (Sotah 22b).
It is clear that these words are not directed specifically at any one member of Anash; there are exceptional individuals who are different. But sadly, they are so few that they could be counted by a child.
Is it really for this that our holy Rebbeim invested their souls and deepest energies—that when "behold! He stands behind our wall" (Song of Songs 2:9), such frightening abandonment would result?
Summary
The Rebbe urges Chassidim not to remain passive or divided as Mashiach approaches but instead rise above self-interest and trivial concerns to actively spread Torah and unity. He calls for honest self-reflection on whether current behavior honors the legacy entrusted by previous generations.
