במענה על מכתבו מי"ז מנ"א, ולפלא שאינו מזכיר מפגישתו עם האברכים השלוחים שליט"א והשתתפותו בהתועדות שלהם וכו', אשר עי"ז הי' נתוסף חיות (און אפגעפרישקייט) בכמה מהענינים, ואז הי' רואה שצדק בדבריו שההתבוננות במצבו הוא ככתבו, עצת היצר, וכידוע הבחינה בזה לראות השפעת ההתבוננות והמחשבה בהנוגע לפועל, שבאם עי"ז באה חלישות בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות, מקורה בלתי טהור, וק"ל.
ולפלא שבה בשעה שבמקומו כר נרחב ביותר להחזקת היהדות בכלל ולהפצת המעינות ביחוד, מחפשים הם ענינים אחרים ואפילו מעבר לים, בה בשעה שההשגחה העליונה הזמינה להם פרנסתם ברוחניות ובד' אמות בסביבה שלהם, והפרנסה בגשמיות הרי אצל איש הישראלי היא מסובבת מהפרנסה ברוחניות.
ויה"ר ששורותי אלה המעטות תספיקנה להבהיר המצב וישפיע גם על חבריו ידידיו ומכיריו בזה ויהי' בהצלחה, כוונתי שיתוסף חיות במרצם ובפעולותיהם בקדש ואל ישעו בחיפושים לענינים שצריך עיון גדול אם בשטח עבודתם הם - עכ"פ לעת עתה.

In response to your letter from the 17th of Menachem Av, it is surprising that you do not mention your meeting with the Avrechim shluchim, may they live and be well, and your participation in their farbrengen, etc., through which additional vitality (and refreshment) was brought to several matters. Then you would have seen that you were correct in your words that contemplating your situation as you wrote is advice from the yetzer (inclination). It is known that the test for this is to see the effect of such contemplation and thought in practice: if it leads to weakness in Torah study and mitzvah observance, its source is impure, and this is clear.
It is also surprising that while in your place there is a very broad field for strengthening Judaism in general and spreading the wellsprings in particular, people are searching for other matters—even overseas—while Divine Providence has arranged their spiritual livelihood and their four cubits in their own environment. For a Jewish person, material livelihood is dependent on spiritual livelihood.
May it be G‑d's will that these few lines suffice to clarify the situation and also influence your friends, acquaintances, and those you know there so that there will be success. My intention is that there should be increased vitality in their enthusiasm and activities in holiness, and they should not be distracted by searching for matters which require much consideration as to whether they even belong to their area of work—at least for now.
