True Jewish Growth Means Increasing in Torah and Mitzvos

ב"ה, כ"ט ניסן, תשט"ז ברוקלין.
The Rebbe writes that true growth for a Jew is not about the passage of time, but about increasing in Torah and mitzvos. He encourages strengthening faith and joy through learning Chassidus, and reminds about the daily recitation of Tehillim after davening.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Some time ago I received the note from the members of the committee, and I hope that since then, following the directive of our Rebbeim of blessed memory that one must always ascend in holiness—that is, one must add in matters of holiness, meaning Torah and mitzvos—this has also been your case. This is the true growth of a Jew: not just that months and years are added on the calendar, but that there is an increase in the 248 positive mitzvos corresponding to the 248 limbs, and in guarding the 365 negative mitzvos corresponding to the 365 sinews of a person—limbs and sinews of the soul as well as limbs and sinews of the body. And when there is an increase in this general health, as mentioned, then may Hashem Yisbarach add His blessings in all that is needed.

I hope it is unnecessary to point out to you the ongoing necessity in this time and generation—which has endured so many storms—to also have consistency in that part of Torah which strengthens trust in Hashem Yisbarach and helps better fulfill Hashem's command: 'Ivdu es Hashem b'Simchah' (Serve Hashem with joy), and as written: 'Avadeta es Hashem Elokecha b'Simchah u'V'Tuv Leivav' (You shall serve Hashem your G‑d with joy and gladness of heart), which is attained through learning Toras HaChassidus (Chassidic teachings). I will be grateful if you inform me of good news regarding all the above.

With blessing.

P.S. Surely you know about the takanah (custom) to say Tehillim every day after davening in the morning, as Tehillim is divided according to the days of the month. Hopefully you will keep this from now on and going forward.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that genuine Jewish growth means increasing one's observance of Torah and mitzvos—not merely marking time. He encourages strengthening faith through Chassidus study and maintaining daily practices like reciting Tehillim after davening.
