Chabad Tradition on Mezuzah Placement and the Role of Heker Tzir

The Rebbe inquires about the Chabad tradition regarding mezuzah placement when there is a conflict between heker tzir (the hinge side) and rov tashmisham (majority usage). Rabbi Lanuda responds with details from the Rebbe Maharash's practice, emphasizing heker tzir.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

An issue has come to my attention regarding the laws of mezuzah: when there is a contradiction between heker tzir (the side of the hinge) and rov tashmisham (majority usage), there is a rumor among elder Chassidim about our holy leaders' ruling on this (some say from Admor HaZaken). Since I have heard different versions here, I would be grateful if you could inform me whether you have heard about this matter and the details of the version, etc. The more detailed, the better.

With blessing.

Please inform me:

In his response he writes: By the grace of Hashem, during all my time under the protection of our holy Rebbe zatzukal lehe nbgm ziaa, he would call me every time mezuzahs were being affixed to accompany him and teach me the order for affixing them... This rule he gave me in the name of the Rebbe Maharash: never did he mention any tradition from Admor HaZaken in this matter—that outside of the first door that requires a mezuzah, one should only consider heker tzir; but for the very first door itself, one affixes it on the right even if it opens outward. He added that in his own apartment before it was expanded—specifically in the room where private audiences were later held—all doors opened outward, and the Rebbe Maharash himself placed all mezuzahs according to heker tzir. That means that according to this, there was not even one door considered as an entrance into the room. The Rebbe then asked his father: If so, how does one enter? To which his father Admor Maharash replied: "What does it matter to me? Let him jump through the window." See also what Rabbi Moharazsh Dworkin wrote on this in Sefer Kovetz Razsh p. 57.

Summary

This letter clarifies that in Chabad tradition, when determining mezuzah placement beyond the first door requiring a mezuzah, only heker tzir (the hinge side) is considered—even if all doors open outward—following guidance from the Rebbe Maharash.
