Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 5th of Nissan regarding your soul-accounting and reaching sixty-five years old, in which you do not feel an elevation in your service and fear of Heaven in a measure fitting your Torah study.

It is known from our Sages (Avodah Zarah 19a) that during Torah study there are two periods: "in the Torah of Hashem he meditates" and "in his Torah," which is the ultimate goal of learning. Seemingly, one could ask how it is possible for Hashem's Torah to become his own Torah—there is no comparison at all between the Giver of the Torah and the learner, between Creator and creation. If it is impossible to pass an elephant through the eye of a needle (even in a dream), all the more so regarding the infinite Creator Who is one with His knowledge, wisdom, and Torah (as explained at length by Rambam and in Tanya, especially Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah). Yet this is due to Hashem's kindness and omnipotence—nothing is wondrous for Him.

From this we also understand that for Hashem's Torah to become one's own, one must serve Hashem; intellectual study alone does not suffice at all. As Mechilta (Yisro) says: "Accept My kingship first, then accept My decrees." And in Berachos (start of ch.2): each day one must first accept the yoke of Heaven before accepting the yoke of Torah and mitzvos.

From all this it is clear that if one's preparation is not as described [all included in our Sages' saying that receiving the Torah was preceded by 'naaseh' before 'nishma'], and if one's learning does not follow this path, then there is no true connection between the person and his learning; thus its effect is not apparent. Still, so as not to remove free choice, he is allowed to learn and understand Torah if he has intellect—since this follows natural ways. As our Sages say (Mishnah Avodah Zarah ch.4): "He loses his world because..." Especially since according to the assurance that "no one will be cast away," eventually words of Torah will bring him back to the right path—but unfortunately this might only happen in another reincarnation (Tanya end ch.39), meanwhile losing decades etc.

The conclusion from all this: One must study Torah with purity (by being careful with immersion as per Ezra's ordinance), preceded by fear of Heaven and acceptance of Heaven's yoke. Since even after all this Divine assistance is needed, one should also give charity before studying; then Hashem's measure-for-measure approach grants success in learning regardless if one is poor or rich.

It is understood that it isn't possible to explain everything needed in a letter, but I hope these few lines will suffice if you reflect on them properly.

You surely know about the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law—the Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—and keep them; at least keep them from now on.

Blessings,
In the name of my revered father-in-law Shlita,
Secretary

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true impact from Torah study comes when it is combined with fear of Heaven and acceptance of G‑d’s sovereignty. Practical steps like ritual purity and daily learning routines help align spiritual growth with intellectual pursuit.
