נאך א איבעררייס בין איך געווען צופרידען צו באקומען אייער בריף פון 3/9 אין וועלכען איר שרייבט וועגען דער מעגליכקייט פון פאנד,[2] פון וועלכען מען זאל יעדעס יאר אויסטעיילען א פרייז פאר א גוטען תלמיד.
זעלבסט פארשטענדליך, אז אזא זאך קען מען איינארדנען, אבער עס איז אויך פארשטענדליך, אז דאס איז ניט א זאך פון א סקאלערשיפ, נאר א אנרעגונגס פאנד, און אין דעם איז אויך ניט מעגליך צו באשטימען די געלט סומע, וואס דאס ווענדעט זיך אן דעם מענשן וועלכער וויל איינשעטלען אזא זאך (די גרויס פון דער סומע פאר דעם צוועק, וויפיל זאל אויסגעטיילט ווערען יעדעס יאר און צו וויפיל מענשן), און ווען איר וועט אויסקלייבען איינע פון די מעגליכע אויבען דערמאנטע רעכין איך אז מען וועט דאס קענען צושטאנד בריינגען אין איינע פון די חב"ד לערן אנשטאלטען אין ארצנו הקדושה אדער מאראקא.
איך האב אייך ניט געשריבען וועגען דעם, וויילע בא אידען איז דאס פארטיילען פון פרייזעס אזעלכע ניט קיין אפטע ערשיינונג, און חאטש מען איז ניט געגען דעם, האט מען אבער אויך ניט ערמוטיגט אזעלכעס, זיכער איז איינע פון די אורזאכען, דאס נעמען אין אכט אז דער לערנען אין די ישיבות איז פארבונדען מיט קדושה-הייליגקייט, האט מען ניט געוואלט אנרעגען דאס אויבען דערמאנטע, אום ניט צו באטאנען אז דאס ווערט - דורך די תלמידים - געטאן צוליב געלט נוצען אדער אנדערע מאטעריעלע נוצען, אבער גראדע אין די לעצטע יארען האבען פילע ישיבות און ספעציעל אין ארץ ישראל, אנגעהויבען איינפירען אזעלכעס (ניט דורך געלט פרייזעס, נאר אין אפטע געשאנקען פון ספרים).
איר שרייבט קיינע איינצעלהייטען וועגען געזונט, וויל איך האפען אז דאס איז געווען נאר א פאראיבערגייענדע זאך, און אז היינט פילט נאך מער בעסער און וועט קענען פארבריינגען דעם יום טוב פסח אויף א פאסענדען אופן.
מיט א וואונש צו גוטע בשורות אין דאס אלץ אויבען געזאגטע און ספעציעל וועגען גוטען געזונט.

After a delay, I was pleased to receive your letter from 3/9 in which you write about the possibility of a fund from which each year a prize would be distributed to a good student. Naturally, such a thing can be arranged; however, it is also understood that this is not a scholarship but rather an encouragement fund. It is also not possible to determine the amount of money for this purpose in advance—it depends on the person who wishes to establish such a thing (the size of the sum for this purpose, how much should be distributed each year and to how many people). When you choose one of the possible options mentioned above, I think it will be possible to implement this in one of the Chabad educational institutions in our Holy Land or Morocco.
I did not write to you about this because among Jews distributing such prizes is not a common phenomenon. Although there is no opposition to it, neither has it been encouraged. Certainly one of the reasons is that learning in yeshivos is associated with holiness and sanctity; they did not want to emphasize that what is being done by students is for monetary or other material benefit. However, in recent years many yeshivos—especially in Eretz Yisrael—have begun instituting such things (not through cash prizes but often through gifts of seforim).
You do not write any details regarding health; I hope this was only a passing matter and that today you feel even better and will be able to celebrate Pesach properly.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while giving monetary prizes as encouragement for students is acceptable if done thoughtfully, it should not overshadow the spiritual motivation for Torah study. The focus must remain on holiness rather than material gain.
