Continuous Creation and the Unique Role of Shabbat

The Rebbe explains that while creation is ongoing every day, Shabbat marks the completion of the original creation—something from nothing. Daily creation is a renewal of what already exists, whereas Shabbat commemorates the initial act of creation. Guidance on Chassidus study is also given.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Tuesday, in which you write about your difficulty with the idea that creation happens every day and every moment—as we say "HaMechadesh b'Tuvo b'chol yom tamid ma'aseh Bereishis" (He renews in His goodness every day continually the work of creation)—if so, what is the significance of Shabbat, about which it says "u'vayom hashvi'i shavat va'yinafash" (and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed) from the creation of the six days of Bereishis?

The distinction is simple according to what is written: "Va'yichulu hashamayim v'haaretz v'chol tzeva'am" (And the heavens and the earth were finished and all their host), and it says "Ein kol chadash tachat hashemesh" (There is nothing new under the sun), after the completion of the six days of Bereishis. For what is renewed afterward every day—the continual act of creation—is a renewal of what already exists, unlike during the six days of Bereishis which was an original innovation: something that never existed before, something from nothing.

Regarding what you wrote about a study schedule in Chassidus: this depends on your knowledge and abilities; therefore, consult with elder Anash present locally—explain your situation to them and they will guide you.

You surely know about the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—the well-known ones—and at least keep these from now on.

Blessings.

In the name of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita—secretary

* See further in this matter in "Ve'eheyeh Etzlo Amon," from 5700 (1940), part two onward. There are also further distinctions regarding this topic between Rosh Hashanah and between Shabbat and weekdays; this is explained in many places. Among them: Sefer HaMitzvos by tzt"z, mitzvah "Lo Teva'aru Esh B'Shofoteichem."

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Shabbat commemorates G‑d's original act of creating something from nothing, while daily creation is a renewal of existing reality. He also encourages maintaining regular study in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya according to one's abilities.
