B"H, Hanukkah, fifth candle, 5716. Brooklyn.
To all those gathered and participating in the annual United States celebration of the Central Yeshivos Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch—may Hashem be upon them for life—Shalom u'Vrachah!
For the annual celebration, 3 Teves 5716. I send my greetings and blessing to the activists of the yeshivah and all those assembled who have come to participate in the annual Torah celebration of the Central Yeshivos "Tomchei Temimim" in America.
Since this celebration takes place tomorrow after Hanukkah, when the influence of this luminous festival is still fresh in everyone's memory and will surely illuminate daily life throughout the year, I wish to emphasize a few essential points from Hanukkah.
Hanukkah reminds us that even something like the Beis HaMikdash—the holiest place of Divine presence—can under certain circumstances become defiled, even if outwardly it remains whole. In such a case, Hanukkah teaches us that one can purify the Beis HaMikdash only through complete mesirus nefesh: through open and bold resistance against forces of darkness and impurity, without making calculations about who are the "mighty," the "many," etc.
The lesson from this for our times is clear. Our Sages say: Since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash, Hashem has only the four cubits of halachah in His world; a yeshivah is thus the holiest place for Divine presence. We must ensure that Torah study is with pure holiness and awe of Hashem—which nowadays more than ever demands mesirus nefesh.
This spirit of mesirus nefesh and Torah study with fear of Heaven permeates Lubavitcher yeshivos. And this mesirus nefesh is not only within the four cubits of the yeshivah or just for oneself but also outside the yeshivah and for others—both near and far. This is one of the unique characteristics of Lubavitcher yeshivos, implanted in them from their founding by our Rebbe z"l and his son our Rebbe—the previous Rebbe—zatzal nbg"m zi"a.
The students of Lubavitcher yeshivos are taught to be like the Chashmonaim of our generation—the self-sacrificing and tireless fighters for Torah-true Judaism in various parts of the world.
It is therefore understandable how great is the merit of all those who take part in supporting and expanding Lubavitcher yeshivos. In this spirit of Hanukkah, such support should be with one's person and resources—and ever increasing—in order to enable Lubavitcher yeshivos to continually expand in spreading ner mitzvah v'Torah or (the candle is a mitzvah and Torah is light) and maor shebaTorah (the luminary within Torah) from the yeshivah into public spaces and from home into one's entire environment.
And in this merit may Hashem also increase ever more abundant blessing and success for each individual and their household—may they live—in both material and spiritual matters.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Hanukkah's message calls for unwavering mesirus nefesh in preserving holiness through Torah study. Supporting Lubavitcher yeshivos extends this light beyond their walls, bringing blessings both materially and spiritually to all who participate.
