Two Tracks in Nigleh and Chasidus: Overview and In-Depth Study

The Rebbe explains that both Nigleh and Chasidus require two modes of study: an overview (Migers) and in-depth (Iyun). He gives practical guidance for structuring these studies and encourages using one's talents for education, adding this is in addition to the daily study cycles.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It is surprising that since your letter before Rosh HaShanah, I have not received any news from you, especially regarding how you utilized the days of the month of Tishrei—the general month for the entire year, which is endowed with all good. A person must draw this goodness into the rest of the months of the year. Certainly, you will fill me in at the next opportunity.

Regarding what you wrote then about a detailed order in learning Nigleh and Chasidus: In general, both require study for depth (Iyun) and study for overview (Migers). The overview study should be in the weekly Torah portion, a tractate divided among Shas, and practical halachos needed for daily life in Nigleh; in Chasidus, overview study should be on the weekly portion (Torah Or in winter and Likkutei Torah in spring and summer) or from pamphlets printed for set times. The in-depth study—both in Nigleh and Chasidus—should be where your heart desires, as our Sages say. The details—how much time each day and when—depend on each individual’s circumstances; therefore, consult with your local Anash friends.

As to your question about which area to engage in: If Hashem has granted you talent for education and influence over others, you should use this gift. To maximize its benefit, if possible it is worthwhile to try to make this also your material livelihood. For the recipient there is little difference whether one acts purely for its own sake or also for personal livelihood. As our Sages ruled (Sifri Ki Teitzei 24:19): if someone loses a coin and a poor person finds it, he has fulfilled tzedakah. Of course all this is in addition to the three daily study cycles established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—which you surely observe.

Blessings for good news regarding all of the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that both Nigleh and Chasidus require structured learning—both broad review and deep analysis—and encourages using one’s talents to benefit others while maintaining foundational daily Torah study cycles.
