במענה על מכתבו מעש"ק, בו כותב שלא הבין למה התכוונתי בהנוגע לעבודת ... אם להמנע כו'.
הנה פשיטא שאין עניני למנוע את מי שהוא מפעולות טובות, ובפרט בהנוגע לחינוך דור הצעיר, אלא שכתבתי שמזניחים הם עבודתם העיקרית ותפקידם מפני זה, כי לדעתי תפקידם העיקרי וכמ"ש כמה פעמים הוא הצלת הנוער מליפול בידי הלעו"ז ולהעמידו באופן שיקבל חינוך כשר, וכל שאר הענינים המזדמנים לידם, רק אם יכולים הם להעשות באופן שלא יגרעו במילוי תפקידם העיקרי, יישר חילם ואשרי חלקם.
ואף שבכלל קשה להחליט ולפעול בעצמו להמנע מפעולה טובה אף שאינה על שכמו באופן ישר, הנה גם זה דורשים מאתנו (ובלבד שכנ"ל הטעם הוא מפני שהוא עסוק באותה שעה עצמה וגם מקודם לזה במצוה שהיא מצוה שלו ואינה נעשית ע"י אחרים)...
נהניתי ממ"ש אודות פעולות זוגתו תחי', ויה"ר ששניהם יקיימו מרז"ל מעלין בקדש מתוך בריאות הנכונה והרחבת הדעת אמיתית.

In response to your letter sent before Shabbat, in which you write that you did not understand what I meant regarding the work... whether to refrain, etc. It is obvious that my intention is not to prevent anyone from good activities, especially regarding the education of the younger generation. Rather, I wrote that they are neglecting their main work and role because of this. In my opinion, as I have written many times, their main function is saving the youth from falling into the hands of the 'other side' and ensuring they receive a proper education. All other matters that come their way should only be done if they can be accomplished without detracting from fulfilling their main role—may their strength be upright and fortunate is their lot.
And although in general it is difficult to decide and act on one's own to refrain from a good deed even if it is not directly his responsibility, nevertheless, we are also required (provided, as above, that the reason is because he is occupied at that very time—and even before—with a mitzvah that is his own and cannot be done by others)...
I was pleased with what you wrote about your wife's activities—may it be G‑d's will that both of you fulfill our Sages' teaching to always ascend in holiness with true health and genuine broad-mindedness.
