Marriage as a Priority and the Importance of Not Being Alone

The Rebbe writes that above all else, it is essential to establish a family life, as it is not good for a person to be alone. He advises strengthening Torah study, giving charity, and checking tefillin, and urges involvement in spreading Judaism and Chassidus.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

...And let it be known that all the above is not nearly as important as the main matter, which is that one must establish a family life. As explained clearly in our holy Torah, Toras Chaim, and it is also evident in practice how "lo tov heyot ha'adam levado" (it is not good for man to be alone), and elaborating on such an obvious matter is unnecessary. However, since everything requires help from Heaven—especially regarding marriage, as it says: "Bayit ve'hon nachalat avot u'meHashem isha maskelet" (A house and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the L‑rd) (Mishlei 19:14), and especially regarding a second match which depends on one's deeds (Sotah 2a)—therefore he should increase promptly in his study of both Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus; maintain—without vow—the three daily study portions instituted by my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya; set aside some coins for tzedakah every weekday before prayer; also, it is proper to have his tefillin checked. May Hashem grant him success to share good news about all this.

Regarding what he wrote at the end of his letter—that he has not written until now because there was nothing good to report—this not only does not answer the question but actually makes it greater. For a Tomchei Temimim student living in Eretz HaKodesh—contrary to what the times demand, especially in our orphaned generation—not being involved in spreading Judaism generally and disseminating Chassidus with its guidance and customs specifically—is unacceptable. He must engage in this from now on to the best of his ability and even more so. Then it will be known Above that success is seen. May it be G‑d's will that at least from now on this will be corrected and gradually he will also make up for what was lacking in previous years.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that establishing a family is of utmost importance and should take precedence over other concerns. Alongside this priority, one should strengthen Torah study, charity, mitzvah observance, and actively spread Judaism and Chassidus.
