Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your esteemed letter from the end of the month of Ziv, which is also the beginning of the month of Ziv (as explained in "BaChodesh," Rosh Hashanah 2b), and its beginning brings good news that your son Ben-Tzion is studying at the holy yeshivah Tomchei Temimim, founded by the Rebbe zatzal nishmaso Eden nasi Yisrael. Based on what is explained by one of the early sages in the name of the Yerushalmi*, that the name Ben-Tzion is a segulah for long life and good years, your son will merit and succeed not only in literal long life and years but also in spiritual longevity—that his days and years be filled with his holy Torah, which is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. This leads to action as our sages say: great is study for it brings to action—together with all his siblings.

I was pleased to read in your letter that you poured water (served) for Harav HaGaon and Chassid renowned for his righteousness and conduct etc., Moreinu HaRav Shlomo Alfandari z"l. I am interested to know if it is possible to obtain this sage's books; it is understood this could also be as an exchange with books published by Kehot Publication Society. Also, if his writings and innovations in revealed and hidden Torah—which surely remained among his estate—are being prepared for print.

Regarding what you elaborate in your letter about your situation and that joy does not always rest upon your soul: this is explained at length and briefly in Sefer HaTanya Kadisha by our master the Alter Rebbe, especially chapter 31. One should increase this joy through contemplation mentioned at the beginning of chapter 41 of Tanya: how Melech Malchei HaMelachim Hakadosh Baruch Hu leaves above and below and stands over (each individual Jew) and fills all the earth with His glory etc., etc., and it is known that strength and joy are in His place (see Chagigah 5b—and Sefer Avodat HaKodesh by Harav Moshe Ibn Gabbai part Tachlit chapter 57). Through such contemplation, joy increases within a person; as joy from mitzvah increases (mitzvah meaning connection and union with the Creator), then according to the rule that joy breaks all boundaries, those things which oppose or limit a person—both physically and spiritually—are diminished. The Shechinah only rests amid mitzvah-joy, as known from what the great teacher writes in his Yad HaChazakah Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah chapter 7 halachah 4.

It is understood that none of this contradicts serving Hashem when sometimes bitterness is required, as explained at length at the end of chapter 34 of Tanya Kadisha and in Iggeres HaTeshuvah there chapter 11.

I have asked Anash to provide you with some books published by Kehot Publication Society; surely you will treat them generously and benefit many through their content among your congregation and those influenced by you—the merit of many depends on him.

With blessing for success in your sacred position.
