It has been a long time since I have received any letters from you; therefore I was glad at least to receive news about what is happening with you and your household through Havavac"h iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moreinu HaRav Yosef Pleyer, as well as about your participation in the farbrengen on the day of the hilula of my revered father-in-law, the leader of Israel. It is already known that on the day of the hilula, the soul of the one who is being commemorated ascends from a higher world to an even higher world. As our Sages say: 'They have no rest because they go from strength to strength,' and consequently all those connected to him are also drawn upward in this ascent. However, it is upon them to make vessels for this ascent and strive that it be revealed in thought, speech, and action—especially in action, for this is primary: 'today is for doing.'

This is particularly relevant as we approach the years referred to as 'these are the days of Mashiach' (Shabbat 151b; see Rashi there, Rambam Hilchot Teshuvah ch. 8:9 and end of Hilchot Melachim; Avodat HaKodesh vol. II ch. 38; Iggeret HaKodesh end sec. 26; etc., though this is not the place for elaboration). May Hashem grant you merit to share good news regarding all of the above.

It is clear and obvious that all these matters apply to every single member of Anash who has it within their ability to act—for in our generation especially, this is a personal obligation.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that on a tzaddik's hilula, his soul rises ever higher and uplifts those connected to him. We must prepare ourselves so this spiritual ascent manifests in our thoughts, words, and especially deeds—fulfilling our unique mission in these special times.
