Jews Are Never a Desert, Every Jew Holds Hidden Treasures

The Rebbe writes that no Jewish community is ever truly a desert; every Jew possesses immense hidden treasures of holiness. The task is to reveal these treasures, and even where success has not yet been seen, sincere effort will surely yield positive results.

Mr. Yaakov sheyichyeh Parnas

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive the news from Haraha"ch hava"ch iy"a nu"n one who is involved in tzt"z with energy and many activities, Moreinu HaRav Tzvi Hirsh sheyichyeh Chitrik, regarding your interest in the communal work of Lubavitch. He also sent me your article where you described the Yud-Tes Kislev farbrengen, and I hope that your interest is lasting and will continue also in the weekdays throughout the year. As Chassidus teaches and points out, being interested in another Jew—and Ahavas Yisrael in general—must be and is tested and demonstrated through one's corresponding relationship to ordinary Jews in their everyday lives. Especially considering that if one truly desires—it is possible for every Jew to sanctify every detail and occurrence of his daily life.

This is also the mission of every Jew: all were made into a "kingdom of priests and a holy nation," at the very moment they became a people as a whole—at Matan Torah (the Giving of the Torah). Therefore as well—reading in your article the expression that "Yiddishkeit in Brazil is a desert" (with which I cannot agree), I hope you do not hold this expression literally—rather it was said as strong language to influence the reader and "move him." A "desert" means a place where even if one would plow and sow nothing would grow.

The teaching from the Baal Shem Tov and Rabbeinu HaZaken is that every Jew is an "Eretz Chefetz," i.e., a land one longs for because it contains priceless treasures. So too, every Jew at all times and in every place possesses tremendous treasures and has an unblemished point of Jewishness; our work consists only in uncovering and bringing out this point of Jewishness which is hidden and not visible—then one also reveals the hidden treasures.

This uncovering and bringing out of the point of Jewishness varies: some can do this themselves; others need outside help. But it is certain that when one plows properly and then sows—the Holy One, blessed be He, gives rains of blessing so much so that from one kernel can grow an entire tree yielding good fruit.

There are no exceptions: even those who until now have not succeeded in this—if there will be those who plow to the fullest extent and sow to the fullest extent—the time will surely come for growth and for producing the desired fruits.

I hope that you, having influence over a large circle of readers, will do everything within your ability to bring this closer, to do your part in this to the fullest extent—and may Hashem grant you success.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that no Jew or community is ever truly barren; each holds infinite potential for holiness. Our mission is to reveal these inner treasures through persistent effort, faith in others' potential, and genuine Ahavas Yisrael.
