Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter, I was pleased to hear that you are seeing success in your study of Chassidus with the students of the vocational school. As for what you wrote about someone not succeeding much in his own studies, this is contrary to the words of our master, the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya—decisor in the hidden aspects of Torah—and the Shulchan Aruch—decisor in the revealed aspects—who writes at the beginning of his sefer Torah Or that through acts of tzedakah one's mind and heart become refined a thousand times over. (From this very wording it is understood that only the mind and heart are refined, and in an extraordinary way—a thousand times so. According to the explanation of tzt"z and glosses to Likkutei Torah on three parshiyos there, this is not only an increase in quantity but also in quality and incomparably so, as it is from the world of action to the world of Atzilus. But even then it is only refinement, meaning that if one studies for an hour afterward he will succeed as if he had studied for a thousand hours; but still, one must actually study that hour. And 'study' means with one's own soul, and afterward also for its own sake [lishmah], as explained in Chassidus regarding all levels in this matter.)
May Hashem grant you success in all the above and may you see results such that there remains no room for interference from forces opposed to holiness.
With blessings for success and a good inscription and sealing [for a good year], and to hear good news regarding your father's health improvement.
P.S. Regarding what you wrote about there being reason for you to be at home during Rosh Hashanah—even though many students of Tomchei Temimim will be spending these auspicious days within the yeshivah walls—and that your reason is because your father's health is not as it should be: I am amazed and shocked at such a lack of trust in Hashem—that already at the end of Menachem Av it is being decided and assumed (G‑d forbid) that your father's health will still not be proper after another month! And therefore you accept as logical that you should reduce your efforts in prayer, etc. It would be far better—and more fitting according to our holy Rebbeim's instruction—'Tracht gut vet zein gut' (Think good and it will be good), to be confident that surely your father's health will improve, and surely you will be able to increase your service—service of the heart—as much as necessary.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches us to maintain unwavering trust in Hashem even when faced with uncertainty about a loved one's health. Rather than reducing spiritual effort out of worry, we should strengthen our faith and continue our service with confidence that Hashem will bring improvement.
