Parents Should Support Their Son's Decision to Grow a Beard

The Rebbe writes that parents, especially mothers, should support and encourage their son’s choice to grow a beard. He emphasizes that external appearance is insignificant compared to inner values, and discourages weakening a child's resolve due to concerns about others' opinions.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

...Although it is uncomfortable for me to write about this matter, since it concerns the well-being of "someone" from Israel, I have no permission to remain silent. I must express my disappointment because I truly hoped that after the struggle your son... went through himself and with his environment—especially regarding his external appearance—you, his parents (and mainly his mother), should have been the first to encourage and strengthen him in this path full of challenges. As is commonly said in the world: a mother is compassionate. Especially since the matter of external appearance, according to everyone, is not an essential issue in itself and has no real importance at all on its own; it is merely a matter of convention. Therefore, all its "importance" lies in pleasing those who see him and removing the question of "what will people say?"—and not those people who have an appreciation for the inner content of life. When such people see a man or woman standing firmly by their opinions and going against the current, it arouses respect in them. Rather, it is only those people who are uninterested in what is inside but just want everyone to follow the crowd. On the other hand, this shakes the inner confidence a person has when he lives daily according to his own conscience—not when he is forced to go against his own view. In this particular case I was disappointed.

Certainly you will forgive me for these lines; obviously it is uncomfortable for me to write about this (especially since you yourself conduct yourself according to Ashkenazic fear of Heaven regarding this matter). But as I wrote in one of my previous letters: this is not an issue about the mitzvah of growing a beard but rather about having an appropriate attitude when seeing a close person—especially a son or daughter—struggling to arrange their life as they see fit and then having their strength weakened because of the argument "what will people say?" (Tanya chapter 32)...

With blessings for proper health and all good.
