איך בין געווען צופרידן צו באקומען א באריכט פון אייער ארבעט, און זיכער הויבט איר שוין אן איינצוארדנען די צוגרייטונגען צום חודש אלול און צו דער צייט נאכן זומער, וואס דאס דארף אויך איינווירקן אויף דער גאנצער צוקינפטיקער פראגראם; נעמענדיק אין אכט אז דער חודש אלול איז דאך דער חודש החשבון פון א גאנץ יאר און דער חודש הרחמים, וואס שטעלט א אידן אוועק אזוי אז ער זאל דערנאך ראש השנה און חודש תשרי בכלל קענען באקומען א כתיבה וחתימה טובה פאר זיך און אלע בני ביתו.
און די צוגרייטונג דארף זיין אין ביידע טיילן פון מענטשלעכער אויפפירונג, לויט ווי מענטשלעכע מעשים ווערן איינגעטיילט: די פליכטן פון מענטשן צום אויבערשטן (בין אדם למקום) און פון מענטשן צו מעטשן (בין אדם לחברו).
וואס דאס איז אויך די אנדייטונג פון דעם נאמען פון חודש - אלו"ל, ווי עס ווערט דערקלערט אין ספרים, אז דאס איז א ראשי-תיבות (א) א ני ל דודי ו דודי ל י, וואס דאס נעמט אריין אלע זאכן פון בין אדם למקום, און (ב) א יש ל רעהו ו מתנות ל אביונים, דאס זיינען די זאכן צווישן מענטש און מענטש.
און אז מ'גיט זיך אפ דעם ריכטיקן חשבון אין די ביידע טיילן פון מענטשלעכן לעבן, העלפט דאן דער בורא עולם אז מ'שטעלט זיך אוועק מיט גוטע החלטות פאר די טעג, וואכן און חדשים וואס דארפן אנקומען און זיי קומען דאן אן לטובה ולברכה עלינו ועל כל ישראל.
בברכת הצלחה צו פארגרעסערן די ארבעט מיט ברייטקייט און מיט שמחה און זעלבסטפארשטענדלעך אויך פארגרעסערן די צאל חברות ככל האפשרי, און ווי עס איז באוואוסט די אנווייזונג פון חכמינו זכרונם לברכה אז כל המקיים נפש אחת מישראל כאלו קיים עולם מלא.

I was pleased to receive a report of your work, and I am sure you are already beginning to arrange preparations for the month of Elul and for the time after the summer. This should also influence the entire future program; considering that the month of Elul is the month of accounting for the whole year and the month of mercy, which positions a Jew so that afterward on Rosh Hashanah and in Tishrei in general he can receive a good inscription and sealing for himself and all his household.
The preparation must be in both areas of human conduct, as human actions are divided: duties between man and G‑d (bein adam laMakom) and between man and his fellow (bein adam lechavero). This is also hinted at in the name of the month—Elul—as explained in sefarim: it is an acronym for (a) Ani LeDodi VeDodi Li ("I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine"), which includes all matters between man and G‑d; and (b) Ish Lere'eihu Umatnot LaEvyonim ("each person to his friend and gifts to the poor"), which refers to matters between people.
When one gives proper accounting in both areas of life, then the Creator of the world helps that one stands with good resolutions for the coming days, weeks, and months—and they will come for good and blessing upon us and all Israel.
With blessings for success to expand your work with breadth and with joy—and naturally also to increase the number of members as much as possible. As is well known from our Sages' instruction: "Whoever sustains one soul from Israel is as if he sustained an entire world."
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Elul is a time for honest self-reflection in both our relationship with Hashem and with others. By preparing properly in both areas, we merit blessings for ourselves and all Israel in the coming year.
