Teaching Children Is a Privilege, Not a Favor

The Rebbe writes that teaching and bringing Jewish children closer to Hashem is not a favor but a great privilege. He emphasizes that this work brings both material and spiritual blessings, and the true merit lies in being part of this holy mission.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 27th of Sivan. I was amazed by the content of your lengthy letter, and with every page I read, my astonishment grew more and more. Surely you believe in Hashem, and therefore you know that Torah and mitzvos are the channels and vessels for receiving Hashem's blessing in all that a person and his family need. When the Creator has granted you the beautiful portion that even your material livelihood comes through involvement in education al taharas hakodesh—that is, by bringing close the hearts of Jewish boys and girls—you should thank Hashem for this every single day. Yet instead, you look at the whole matter as if you are doing them a favor... as if it is your personal concern or as if the students are your own children and under your responsibility. Therefore, if your salary is paid on time (and you do not want to know from where or how—for what difference does it make to you), then in your great kindness you will answer their request and learn with the students.

As for what you wrote about disagreements among members of the administration—whether they exist or not—it does not affect any of the above at all. Since bringing your students closer until now to our Father in Heaven is your privilege and success both materially and spiritually—and also for your family—and if not for needing a livelihood, it would be unclear who should pay whom: whether you should pay the administration for giving you the opportunity to participate in an institution named after my father-in-law, the Rebbe, Nasi Yisrael, which prepares the way for Moshiach's coming by increasing light in the world through the breath of children's mouths—or they should pay you. But apparently if not for needing a livelihood, it is doubtful whether you would be involved in this matter at all. So Hashem arranged things so that you give your time and energy while they serve as intermediaries between Hashem—Who sustains all—and you and your family. And I still do not know if better intermediaries could be found—more G‑d-fearing or more scrupulous in G‑d's word.

It is already known how my grandfather, Rebbe Maharash, explained on the verse 'Relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place; but you and your father's house will perish'—the merit of this mitzvah will be lost; so too here: I am certain regarding my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that his institutions will succeed and develop and that children will continue to receive chareidi education... The only question is whether this merit will come through you or whether you have not yet merited it—and Hashem will provide someone else whom He deems worthy to merit saving Jewish souls and connecting them to the Tree of Life to fulfill 'And you who cleave to Hashem your G‑d are all alive today.'

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that educating Jewish children is an immense privilege rather than a mere job or favor; it brings blessings both materially and spiritually. One should cherish this opportunity as a unique merit granted by Hashem.
