Haraha"ch vavach" iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moreinu HaRav Yissachar Dov Gurvitz

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter from Erev Shabbat along with the enclosed pan, which I will read at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory.

Regarding what you wrote about conduct during vacation days, when approximately two months are given as break and the students return to their parents' homes: In general, the vacation period should be shortened, as is known from our Sages [...] "If you abandon Me for a day, I will abandon you for two." However, since this schedule has already become customary for several years—as seems evident from your letter—one should act pleasantly and diplomatically. Still, I am hopeful that among a significant portion of the students this change will take effect so that at least some will shorten their vacation time. Perhaps it is possible to arrange that not all travel at once; thus there will always be students present during vacation together with those regulars. Accordingly, one should also arrange the manner and timing of exams.

It is also clear that it is not out of the question to cancel vacation time for Beis Rivkah students in the middle of summer. It may be possible to set vacation during the Ten Days of Teshuvah or similar times when learning is in any case not as it should be; and during summer days only change the study schedule according to the type of students—whether just to switch to lighter and more engaging studies or also to shorten the time. In such matters one must decide on site and certainly consult with Anash who know the situation there; "salvation comes through many counselors."

As we approach the days of redemption—the 12th and 13th of Tammuz, redemption of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, head of Israel—may it be G‑d's will that "the body follows the head," so that Hashem grants success to each and every chassid connected or related to him in spreading Judaism in general and Chassidus in particular with good health, ample livelihood, and expanded mind.

Summary

The Rebbe encourages thoughtful adaptation when changing established school schedules. He emphasizes consulting knowledgeable advisors and maintaining a focus on effective Jewish education even during vacation periods.
