Failing a Rabbinic Exam as a Path to Greater Yiras Shomayim

The Rebbe writes that not passing a rabbinic exam may be an opportunity from Divine Providence to further increase one's awe of Heaven, especially for those aspiring to lead a community. He encourages focusing on deepening Yiras Shomayim before retaking the test.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Erev Rosh Chodesh Tammuz in which you ask for an explanation regarding the event where you and your friend stood for an exam to receive a rabbinic position, and your friend succeeded but you did not, and you were told you could retake the exam at the end of MarCheshvan.

We do not know with certainty the intention of Divine Providence, but there is reason to say that: (a) In all matters of holiness, no matter how good the current state is, there is always room to improve and make it even better, since holiness is infinite; (b) In Torah study one must have "Yiras Hashem Hi Otzaro" (the awe of G‑d is its treasure), and likewise in fulfilling mitzvos—as stated by our master the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya (the halachic authority in the mystical aspect of Torah) and author of Shulchan Aruch (the halachic authority in the revealed aspect of Torah), in his holy book Tanya at the beginning of chapter 41: The beginning of service and its main part and root is awe. Especially for someone who wishes to be a Rav and leader of a holy community, this is an instruction that he should devote special attention to increasing even more his level of Yiras Shomayim. As explained in Tanya there are many levels in this matter with detailed explanation. See also Zohar I, 13b end.

This also explains why the exams were postponed until after Tishrei—which is called the month of awe. The path that leads to awe of Hashem is explained in Tanya and in Chassidus generally in many places. Certainly you will discuss this with rabbinic authorities etc... May Hashem grant you success to share good news regarding all the above.

Blessings.

Summary

Setbacks can be opportunities for spiritual growth. The Rebbe teaches that failing an exam may be a sign from Above to deepen one's Yiras Shomayim—especially important for those aspiring to communal leadership—before trying again.
