Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 17th of Sivan in which you write about your situation until now, the changes in it, and your current state that requires correction in several areas. It is well known what our Sages ruled: "If you did not toil and found success, do not believe; if you toiled and did not find success, do not believe." In your case, the choice is given to you to go on the straight and good path before Him both materially and spiritually together—through dedication to learning Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus and fulfilling mitzvos. Among the main points here is serving with care in prayer. All those matters that distract you, which you mention in your letter, it is clearly seen that every individual is given the strength to overcome and nullify those things within his own domain that conceal or obscure his true desire—which is fulfilling the will of the Creator.

It is understood that for everything one needs help from Heaven (Siyata Dishmaya), which is also merited by keeping the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory—in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya as known; giving charity both spiritually and materially; and being careful with Ezra's immersion (Tevilas Ezra), etc.

Especially since you merited to study in Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim, which was founded and is run by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory—who invested and continues to invest his energies with great success in the yeshiva and its students.

The conclusion from all of this: set aside thoughts of debate about your situation etc., and learn with dedication both Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus. Be strong in trust in Hashem that when you exert yourself in all these matters you will find what you seek—and even more so, you will succeed.

Regarding what you write about a weakening of your memory power or sometimes forgetting even simple things: generally this too is connected with your aforementioned debates. When you fulfill this instruction—by diverting your mind from these debates—even these details will improve. Do not force yourself to study specifically a subject where you've struggled; when feeling weak, switch your learning to another topic where your heart desires—and afterward try again.

With blessings for success in all of the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that we are each given strength from Above to overcome inner distractions through dedicated Torah study, mitzvah observance, prayer with care, daily learning portions, charity, and trust in Hashem. Letting go of doubts brings spiritual growth and personal improvement.
