...מ"ש אודות המאורע שקרה לו ששינה איזה ענינים בהישיבה מבלי להתייעץ כדבעי עם המנהל... הנני מעתיק כאן סיפור ששמעתי מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והוא:
ידוע אשר בישיבת תו"ת בכלל ובהנהגת התלמידים בפרט, הי' כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר המנהל פועל. והנה פעם קרה אשר אחד התלמידים קנסוהו בקנס חמור, וכיון שנגע ללבו הרי באופן יוצא מהכלל השתדל הת' הזה לפגוש את כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע ובכה לפניו בדמעות שליש. וכ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב נ"ע אמר לההנהלה אשר יבטלו את הקנס או עכ"פ יקילו בו. כשבא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ונודע לו הדבר, נכנס לכ"ק אביו אדמו"ר ואמר לו, אשר מובן מעצמו שאין הוא ח"ו מהרהר על גוף הענין, אבל כיון שעשוהו למנהל פועל ובמילא מוטלת עליו האחריות במדה ידועה של המוסד והמשמעת בזה הוא עיקר ויסוד, במילא אינו יכול לשאת עליו אחריות בהנהגה כמו זו אשר מבטלים החלטת המנהל פועל וכו' ובמילא מתפטר הוא ממשרה זו. וסוף דבר הי' אשר כ"ק אביו אדמו"ר שינה את כל הענין. איני יודע בפרטיות באיזה אופן, אבל התנהל הענין רק ע"י המנהל פועל וההנהלה.
מובן מעצמו שאין אני מדמה את המנהל פועל בישיבת... לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אבל מובן ג"כ שאין אני מדמה את כבודו לכ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב נ"ע.
והמוסר השכל מסיפור הנ"ל אשר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר פרסמו ובודאי היתה בזה כוונתו להורות לנו איך להתנהג בענינים כמו אלו אשר לא רק מכאן ולהבא צריך להתנהג כמסקנת כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב נ"ע בהנ"ל אלא שככל האפשרי צריך לתקן גם את העבר בזה, ואין בזה ח"ו מענין מיעוט הדמות ופשיטא שאין בזה פסק בנוגע לגוף הדבר וכנ"ל בהסיפור, אבל אחד מיסודי קבלת קיום התורה בכלל ואפשריות קיום ישיבת תו"ת [ו]תפקידה בפרט הוא ענין המשמעת הן של התלמידים והן של [ה]הנהלה, הר"מ והר"י שיחיו.
תקותי חזקה שלא יקפיד על הערתי זו וימלאה... והשי"ת יזכה את כאו"א מאתנו להיות המוח שליט על הלב שזה מוסיף בריאות בגשמיות ובריאות ברוחניות.

...Regarding what you wrote about the incident that happened to you, where you changed certain matters in the Yeshiva without properly consulting with the director as required...
I am copying here a story I heard from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory: It is known that in Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva in general, and especially regarding the conduct of the students, my revered father-in-law was the active director. Once it happened that one of the students was given a severe penalty. Since it touched his heart deeply, this student went out of his way to meet with my revered grandfather, the Rebbe Maharashab, and cried before him with copious tears. The Rebbe Maharashab told the administration to cancel or at least lighten the penalty. When my revered father-in-law learned of this, he went to his father, the Rebbe, and said that obviously he did not question the essence of the matter G‑d forbid; but since he had been made active director and thus bore a certain responsibility for the institution—and discipline is its main foundation—he could not accept responsibility for conduct where decisions of the active director are overturned. Therefore, he resigned from this position. In the end, his father, the Rebbe, changed everything. I do not know exactly how it was done in detail, but matters were conducted only through the active director and administration.
Of course I do not compare the active director in your Yeshiva to my revered father-in-law; but likewise I do not compare your honor to my revered grandfather, the Rebbe Maharashab. The lesson from this story—which my revered father-in-law publicized—was certainly intended to teach us how to act in such matters: Not only should we act from now on according to what was concluded by my revered grandfather in this story, but as much as possible we should also correct past actions in this regard. There is no diminishment of stature here G‑d forbid; certainly there is no ruling regarding the essence of what happened as explained above in the story. But one of the foundations for accepting and upholding Torah generally—and especially for maintaining Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva and its mission—is discipline among both students and staff: administration members, teachers (ramim), and heads (roshei yeshiva).
I strongly hope you will not take offense at this comment and will fulfill it... May Hashem grant each one of us that our mind rules over our heart—for this adds health both physically and spiritually.
