במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו אדר א'.
הנה נהניתי מה שכותב שהוא וכן זוגתו תחי' מקבלים עליהם הענינים דצדקה והנהגות טובות מה שכתבתי לו - בלי נדר -.
ומה שכותב שבדק התפילין והמזוזות ומצא אותם כשרים, הנה צריך שיבדוק אותם על ידי סופר מומחה, ומה טוב שהסופר בעצמו יכתוב לי איך מצא אותם, כי כמדומה לי שיש בהם איזה חשש, ואפשר הוא בהבתים וכו', ויבקש את הסופר הבודק שהוא בעצמו יכתוב לי על דבר זה, כנ"ל.
ומה שמסיים במכתבו מהו שכרי. הנה השכר בזה הוא שירבה בקירוב לבם של בני ובנות ישראל לעבודתו ית' ודוקא בדרכים של קירוב ואהבת ישראל. ובודאי בהשתדלות המתאימה ימצא הדרכים לזה, ומה טוב אם באפשרי שמזמן לזמן יאכילו אורח בביתם אשר מצוה של הכנסת אורחים סגולה מיוחדת לה לבנים.

In response to your letter from the 26th of Adar I: I was pleased to read that you and your wife, may she live, have accepted upon yourselves matters of charity and good conduct as I wrote to you—without making a vow.
Regarding your note that you checked the tefillin and mezuzos and found them kosher: they must be checked by an expert scribe. It would be best if the scribe himself writes to me how he found them, because it seems to me there may be some concern—perhaps with the batim (cases), etc. Please ask the checking scribe to write to me personally about this matter, as above.
You concluded your letter asking what is your reward. The reward is that you will increase in drawing close the hearts of Jewish men and women to serve Him, blessed be He, specifically through ways of closeness and Ahavas Yisrael (love of a fellow Jew). Certainly, with appropriate effort you will find ways for this. It would be especially good if it is possible from time to time to host a guest in your home, for the mitzvah of hospitality has a unique merit regarding children.
