Continue in Your Yeshiva, Take Responsibility for Your Learning and Davening

The Rebbe writes that obstacles to Torah study and prayer are often the work of the yetzer hara, who disguises his arguments. Rather than blaming others or seeking a new yeshiva, one should focus on self-improvement and positively influence peers, investing effort in learning and davening.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from some time ago. Since you are dissatisfied with certain aspects of the yeshiva's order, and in your opinion these details disturb proper diligence in study as well as prayer, you are considering transferring to the Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva in Eretz HaKodesh and ask my opinion about this.

It is unnecessary to elaborate on what is well known and obvious: matters that disturb Torah, avodah (service), or gemilus chassadim (acts of kindness) stem from the se'or she'be'isa—that is, the yetzer hara (evil inclination), which confuses a person in many ways. Even though it is called a fool, when it comes to its work it is an expert craftsman. As is known from the saying of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal: The yetzer hara comes to each person with arguments tailored to his individual nature—even sometimes dressing up as a pious Torah scholar. Therefore, everyone must carefully examine any thoughts about changing one's service of Hashem and consider who is making these arguments—whether they come from the right or left side.

You surely know the story about the tzaddik of Chernobyl printed in the Pesach 5703 sichah. One test for such matters is whether the change will lead to neglect of Torah and avodah or not. In your case, since you are in a yeshiva founded by righteous leaders of the generation and run in their spirit—that is, Torah study with fear of Heaven—it is likely even without knowing all details that studying there brings great benefit. It follows that the yetzer hara opposes this through various schemes to distract you from fulfilling all aspects required by the yeshiva.

If the yetzer hara were to reveal its intent—not wanting you to be diligent in both revealed Torah and Chassidus—you would certainly not listen. As it says "vehanachash hayah arum" (and the serpent was cunning), it comes with cunning: claiming that it is actually the yeshiva that distracts you from diligence in Torah and avodah with proper fear of Heaven—hoping its arguments will be accepted so you'll be distracted from Torah and prayer.

Even if the yetzer hara promises that if you go elsewhere he won't disturb you and you'll be able to study diligently and pray better—he knows that once you've listened at first (since all beginnings are difficult), he'll find ways to draw you further into his net. For man has free choice with two paths before him—as scripture says: "Re'eh nasati lefanecha et hachayim ve'et hatov..." (See I have set before you life and good...). Yet man also receives special help to choose good—as it says: "uvacharta bachayim" (and you shall choose life).

Certainly also in your case—even though the yetzer hara is very cunning—you have been given strength to reject all its arguments and devote yourself wholeheartedly by ignoring distracting thoughts like "the environment doesn't suit me" or "everyone else is at fault for my lack of Torah study or prayer," instead of taking responsibility yourself.

It’s also understood that among your friends at yeshiva there are things needing improvement—for only Hashem, Creator of the world, is perfect—but your approach should be to influence your friends for good rather than being influenced by them. This itself helps correct your own shortcomings through your friends. As explained regarding "Kol Yisrael areivim zeh lazeh" (all Jews are responsible for one another): they form one complete body; each completes his fellow through Ahavas Yisrael.

The conclusion from all this: set aside distracting thoughts about leaving Torah or avodah; immerse yourself in learning both revealed Torah and Chassidus as well as prayer according to yeshiva standards—and then you'll fulfill our Sages' assurance: "Yagata—harei az—umatzata" (If you toil—then—you will find). You did not mention if this also applies regarding your friend... If so, these same confusing arguments apply equally to him; thus this answer applies to him as well.

With blessings for success in learning Torah with fear of Heaven.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that challenges in learning or davening often come from within rather than external factors. Instead of blaming others or seeking escape, invest effort where you are—positively influencing peers—and take personal responsibility for spiritual growth.
