Spiritual Growth Requires Personal Effort, Not Self-Mortification

The Rebbe writes that improving one's spiritual state depends on personal effort and not on self-mortification. He advises focusing on controlling one's impulses and consulting with a mashpia, while continuing to increase study in Chassidus and Nigleh.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write about your spiritual state and your desire to fill the lack in matters of fear of Heaven, prayer, and Torah study. In general, it is well known what our Sages said regarding these matters: "If you did not toil and found—do not believe; if you toiled and did not find—do not believe." From this it is understood that the matter depends on one's own efforts—as long as one truly exerts oneself.

It is unnecessary to point out—since this has already been publicized in many letters and later in discourses of Chassidus—that the path is not through fasts and self-afflictions that weaken one's health. Rather, 'you shall surely help him'—together with the body and the animal soul. The afflictions should be for the animal soul but not for the human body, which is the property of the Holy One, blessed be He. As explained in many places—see Hilchos Nezikei HaGuf by our master the Alter Rebbe (author of Tanya—the halachic authority in the esoteric dimension of Torah) and Shulchan Aruch (the halachic authority in the revealed dimension). The afflictions for the animal soul are: restraining one's mouth from speaking idle words—even necessary words can sometimes be postponed for a while or moments; likewise limiting one's sense of sight, etc., as explained elsewhere (including Sefer HaToldos of Admor Maharash, p. 72 at the end).

You should consult with a mashpia of Chassidus who is near you—and it would be good to consult with Haraha"ch Mohar Shlomo Chaim Kaselman, mashpia of Chassidus at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Lod. It goes without saying that all of this is in addition to increasing your studies in both Chassidus and Nigleh. May Hashem grant you success.

Blessings.

In the name of the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

Spiritual advancement comes through sincere personal effort rather than self-denial or harming one's health. Focus on positive growth by controlling impulses, seeking guidance from a mashpia, and increasing Torah study.
