Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Monday, and according to your request I am hurrying to answer you, although I do not know what more I can add to what I told you explicitly when you were here with me. I will repeat once again: you are healthy and your thoughts and melancholy have no basis. Especially since you have been to the doctor and he told you the same thing—you see that it was unnecessary to go to the doctor, and it would have been better to give that money to charity.

May Hashem help that at least from now on you will nullify all these aforementioned thoughts and strengthen yourself in learning Torah and fulfilling mitzvos with joy.

Regarding what you write about fasting: it is well known—the letter of the Baal Shem Tov to his student the Baal HaToldos about this matter, as well as what our master the Alter Rebbe writes at the beginning of Igeres HaTeshuvah—and in general this is not a path for you. You must annul your vow since previously you conducted yourself this way without saying "bli neder" (without a vow), and for this year and also for the coming year, for any day on which (before annulling your vow now) you had observed a fast then, you should give a redemption of the fast as charity. Additionally, add a lesson—an extra lesson in Nigleh (revealed Torah) and an extra lesson in Chassidus.

Regarding being offered a matter of livelihood: if according to what you write it will not interfere with your work in kosher education, you may accept it. Presumably you will separate a fifth of the additional income for charity. It would be proper for this charity to go to one of the funds established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal.

Blessings for serving Hashem—and specifically with joy.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that unfounded negative thoughts should be dismissed; focus instead on joyful Torah study and mitzvah observance. Fasting is discouraged when not required; rather, give charity and increase learning. Accept new opportunities if they do not hinder holy work.
