Material Charity Alone Does Not Fulfill All 613 Mitzvos

רחל קונין — Rachel Kunin   ב"ה, י"ב טבת, תשי"ד ברוקלין.
The Rebbe writes that while material charity is a great mitzvah, it does not fulfill all 613 mitzvos. He encourages the recipient to continue strengthening spiritual matters and emphasizes the importance of observing all mitzvos, including Shabbos, kashrus, and family purity.

Bracha v'Shalom!

I was pleased to receive your letter from Tuesday in which you write that your children are in good health and study diligently. May Hashem help that you and your husband should have much Jewish and chassidic nachas from them, and may you accept this with good health, a joyful heart, and livelihood.

I was also pleased to learn that you participate in a sisterhood, and I hope you will work to improve the spiritual situation. My hope is strengthened by reading your article in which you write about spiritual vitamins—one of those things that in America must be emphasized at every step: one should not think that by giving material charity alone one has fulfilled all 613 mitzvos. No matter how great the mitzvah of tzedakah is—even being called simply "the mitzvah"—there still remain another 612 mitzvos that must be fulfilled. Among them are keeping Shabbos, kashrus, family purity, and more. No matter how much we repeat and speak about this, it is never enough; there is always a need to repeat it continually—especially when said in English with appropriate explanations. May Hashem help you succeed in this as well.

With blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while giving tzedakah is vital, it does not replace the obligation to observe all other mitzvos. Every Jew must strive to fulfill all aspects of Torah life—including Shabbos, kashrus, and family purity—alongside acts of charity.
