Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the fifth night [of Chanukah], in which you write thoughts about your situation in serving Hashem. Surely you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory (also printed in the Pesach 5703 sichah), regarding the righteous Reb Nachum of Chernobyl: that one must often examine from which side a certain movement or desire comes, for at first glance it is impossible to determine if it is from holiness or the opposite. It is also known the saying of the Rebbe Maharash that even the yetzer hara can dress itself in a silk kapoteh. One of the fundamental tests is that if one sees that a movement or desire brings weakness in one's service, this proves it comes from the left side. So too in your case: it seems from your letter that your soul-searching weakens your enthusiasm and vitality in your holy work—specifically kosher education—so it is very likely this is a trick of the yetzer hara. This is in addition to what is explained in Tanya (chapter 26 and its summary) that even if sadness comes from spiritual matters, one must find strategies to overcome it; see there. From this too we understand that even if all claims are justified, one must distance oneself from them as much as possible—even regarding oneself. From all your soul-searching described, I still do not understand what practical outcome results besides the sadness you mention; therefore, this is not relevant and you should strengthen yourself in educating Jewish boys and girls with an education that brings their hearts closer to their Father in Heaven. Your reward is assured as our Sages say: through this Hashem will enlighten his eyes as well to ascend on the path leading to Beit El.

Regarding your question whether to attend your brother's wedding: The general instruction in such matters is that through closeness one can accomplish more than through rejection and distance. Even though you do not write details about your relationship, my impression is that it would be better for you to be present. Besides the aspect of Ahavas Yisrael involved here, surely you will be able to use this opportunity—either immediately or over time—to bring your brother and his family closer to Jewish ways. May Hashem grant you success in this as well...

With blessing.

Awaiting good news.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that when faced with doubts or sadness about one's spiritual state, one should focus on positive action rather than self-criticism. In family matters like attending a sibling's wedding, closeness and Ahavas Yisrael are more effective than distance for inspiring others toward Judaism.
