Shalom u'Vrachah!
I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from Erev Shabbat Kodesh Vayetze after the long silence.
Regarding what you wrote about making an accounting since your time in your city: in general, the month for accounting is Elul. Throughout the year one should only make such calculations that are certain not to weaken one's service and certainly not to allow even a trace of despair. As is known from the saying: despair comes without awareness. It is also understood that this is entirely contrary to the Baal Shem Tov's demand to serve Hashem with joy; in the word "serve," it also includes the idea of "in all your ways know Him," as explained in Rambam Hilchot De'ot and Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim siman 231.
I was pleased to hear what you wrote about the month of Tishrei, even though you wrote very briefly. I hope this brevity is only in writing and not in actual experience.
Regarding writing for the publication: there is no need to elaborate on its benefit; therefore I hope that from now on you will put effort into this with appropriate enthusiasm.
As for what you wrote about your personal four cubits: it is known that none of the above justifies neglecting one's own avodah in his personal domain. On the other hand—here too—sadness leads more to laziness than to zeal. Therefore begin with practical action—learning—even if only accepting it upon yourself for a short time each day and for longer periods when you have more free time. When there is a seed of potential greatness it is easier to bring it into actuality.
Enclosed is what was printed for Yud-Tes Kislev last year; surely you will share its content with many others, as its message applies all year round.
With blessings for success, M. Schneersohn
P.S. Regarding repeating Chassidus at the wedding—with much success—it is proper in addition to the maamar mentioned in your letter to also repeat "Lecha Dodi" 5689 and according to the talk from Chai Elul 5713. It is surprising that you are unaware of this. It is worthwhile to begin putting on Tefillin d'Rabbeinu Tam. May Hashem grant you success.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that spiritual self-accounting must never lead to weakness or despair but should inspire joyful service and practical action. Even small steps taken consistently can lead to great growth when approached with positivity and resolve.
