...And to note regarding the theme of these days—the days of Chanukah—which, as Rambam writes at the beginning of Hilchos Chanukah, there was a decree and they stretched out their hands etc., and from this came the salvation that sovereignty returned to Israel through the fact that Israel stood firm in the test with mesirus nefesh (self-sacrifice). According to the Rashbam (Pesachim 108b), it was through women that the miracle of Chanukah occurred. So too in our times: through the mesirus nefesh with which Jews guard the flask of oil within their soul—this is the concept of the seal of the Kohen Gadol—miracles will be performed for us even now, to illuminate the sanctuary within every single Jew with pure oil for all eight days, until there comes the unique one among the eight shepherds and is revealed the harp of eight strings.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that just as miracles happened in Chanukah's time due to Jewish self-sacrifice and inner purity, so too today: when we guard our innermost sanctity, we merit miracles and spiritual illumination in our own lives.
