Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 4th of this month, in which you write about your desire and wish to study at the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah in Lod, and you present two considerations: whether to enter this yeshivah immediately or to continue your studies as until now so that your knowledge in the revealed Torah will increase, and only after some time—about half a year or a year—to begin studying at Tomchei Temimim in Lod. You ask for my opinion on this.
It is well known regarding Torah study that while for many mitzvos one can fulfill what was previously lacking at a later time, this does not apply to Torah study. Every moment and hour that one removes himself from his obligation of Torah study—which is a constant positive commandment—is significant.
The same applies regarding a part of Torah—that is, the teachings of Chassidus. Once one has been awakened to this study, on the contrary, one should regret the time that has already passed without this learning and not postpone it for several more months.
Therefore, if the administration of Tomchei Temimim in Lod agrees to accept you, it is proper and good to do so now.
Through studying the inner dimension of Torah—which in the language of the holy Zohar is called "the soul of the Torah"—certainly there will also be an added soul and vitality in your study of Nigleh (the revealed aspect) of Torah. This addition will be not only quantitative but also qualitative.
Certainly you recite Tehillim after Shacharis every day and also give some coins to charity from time to time—which also helps absorb Torah internally until it brings about an essential change in all your ways, as stated by Rambam in Hilchos Deos chapter 5.
With blessings for success in Torah study with awe of Heaven,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
A. Kvent
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Torah study is an ongoing obligation that should never be delayed. Immediate immersion in both Nigleh and Chassidus is encouraged when possible, along with daily Tehillim and charity to internalize learning and transform one's character.
