איך הער אז עס זיינען פראן געוויסע צווייגען פון מסחר וועלכע גייען ניט יעצט לויט ווי די סוחרים האבען געהאפט. און זיכער אז מען דארף קוקען אויף דעם ווי אויף א טעסט (נסיון) וואס השי"ת וויל פרובען אידען, און חאטש ער ברוך הוא ווייס אז א אידישע הארץ איז שטענדיג אפען און רופט זיך אפ צו תורה ומצות דאך בכדי צופרידענשטעלן בית דין מלאכים וועלכע ווילען ניט גלויבען, אז א איד וועט ביישטיין דעם נסיון (טעסט) ווייזט זי דעריבער השי"ת, זעהט, אז חאטש דער יצר הרע קען איינריידין א אידן אז מען דארף פארקלענערען די צדקה, וויילע די געשעפטען זיינען ניט ווי פריער, דאך זיינען אידען גאנץ קלוג פארשטייען זיי אז דאס וויל מען נאר פרובען זיי און ווען ער וועט ביישטיין דעם נסיון און וועט פארשטיין דעם אמת'ן מיין אין דעם, איז ניט נאר אז דער געשעפט וועט ווערען גוט ווי פריער נאר אדרבה עס וועט ווערען נאך בעסער ווי פריער, וויילע א פאטער האט האלט אז דער זון פארשטייט דעם אמת'ן מיין (כוונה) פון דעם פאטערס מעשים, און וואס מער דער קינד ווייזט ארויס זיין חכמה אין דעם אלץ גרעסער זיינען די מתנות וואס ער באקומט פון פאטער. סוחרים זאגען אז וואס מען איז עלטער פארשטייט מען מער דעם ענין פון מסחר, און דעריבער זייענדיג א לאנגע צייט אין מסחר וועט איר פארשטיין די כוונה פון השי"ת אין דעם אויבען דערמאנטען מצב און אז ווי בא א גוטען אינוועסטמענט צי דאס איז א האטעל אדער ביזנעס, איז ניט נאר וואס מען דארף ניט פארקלענערען דעם טייל פון השי"ת אין דעם נאר אדרבה געבען נאך א גרעסערען אן אקאונט אויף זיין טייל, וואס דענסטמאל איז השי"ת מקיים זיין צוזאג אין דער תורה עשר בשביל שתתעשר צו געבען זיין שותף נאך א מער גרעסערע הכנסה ווי פריער.
איך האף אז אייער געזונט צושטאנד איז בעסער ווי ווען איר זייט געווען אין ניויארק און וועט קענען אויך אנזאגען גוטע בשורות וועגען אייער שוועסטער מרת... תחי'.

Although I have not received any letters from you personally, I am pleased to receive greetings from you from time to time through good friends. May Hashem help you so that you can always share good news about yourself both materially and spiritually.
I hear that there are certain branches of business that are not currently going as merchants had hoped. Certainly, one should view this as a test (nisayon) that Hashem wants to try the Jewish people with. Even though He, blessed be He, knows that a Jewish heart is always open and responds to Torah and mitzvos, nevertheless, in order to satisfy the Heavenly Court of angels who do not want to believe that a Jew will withstand the test (nisayon), Hashem therefore shows them: See—even though the yetzer hara can convince a Jew that he should reduce his tzedakah because business is not as it was before—Jews are wise enough to understand that this is only a test for them. When one withstands the test and understands its true meaning, not only will business return to how it was before, but on the contrary—it will become even better than before. This is like when a father sees that his son understands the true intention behind his father's actions; the more the child demonstrates his wisdom in this matter, the greater are the gifts he receives from his father.
Merchants say that as one gets older, one understands more about business matters. Therefore, having been in business for a long time, you will understand Hashem's intention in the aforementioned situation: just as with a good investment—whether it is a hotel or another business—not only should one not reduce Hashem's portion in it but rather give an even greater account for His share. Then Hashem fulfills His promise in the Torah: 'Aser bishvil shetitasher' (Tithe so that you may become wealthy), giving His partner an even greater income than before.
I hope your health is better than when you were in New York and that you will also be able to share good news regarding your sister Mrs... may she live.

Summary
When facing financial challenges, one should see them as Divine tests and maintain or increase tzedakah rather than decrease it. The Rebbe writes that steadfastness in giving brings even greater blessings and prosperity than before.
