Overcoming Distractions by Increasing Torah and Judaism

The Rebbe writes that when one faces distracting and troubling matters, the solution is to become more involved in strengthening Torah and Judaism. Just as physical weakness is remedied by eating more, spiritual distractions are overcome by increasing engagement in holy matters.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

...Regarding what you wrote, that due to your preoccupations you cannot participate in the above-mentioned matter, etc., I am surprised at this, for the opposite makes sense. To what can this be compared? To a person who has become physically weak and is told to increase his eating and drinking, but he responds that since he is weak he does not have the strength to eat or drink, and when he recovers then he will increase his eating and drinking. The same applies here: when one sees that he is preoccupied with matters that confuse and spoil things and bring no satisfaction, one of the ways to be freed from this is to become occupied with strengthening Torah and Judaism—one vanity drives out another vanity [1]. Especially regarding Torah, it is well known from our Sages: "Whoever fulfills the Torah in poverty will ultimately fulfill it in wealth," and poverty and wealth are not only about money but also about time, etc....

With blessing and regards to all Anash sheyichyu.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that spiritual distractions are best overcome by immersing oneself even more in Torah study and Jewish practice—just as physical weakness calls for increased nourishment, so too does spiritual challenge require greater involvement in holy pursuits.
