Shalom u'Vrachah!

I pleasantly received your letter from the 3rd of Nach with its enclosure, and in continuation to what was said during the farbrengen in the sukkah, I hereby repeat once again my blessing of Mazal Tov for the bris milah of your grandson.

It is known as brought in the Acharonim—and elaborated upon by the Rogatchover Gaon—that there are three aspects to the mitzvah of milah: (a) that one must perform circumcision; (b) not to remain uncircumcised; (c) to be circumcised. There are several practical differences and distinctions discussed regarding these. In brief, according to Chassidus: it is obvious there must be an aspect of "turning away from evil," meaning not to be uncircumcised; there must also be "doing good," meaning being circumcised; and above all, as my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, related in the name of our holy Nesi'im—that a chassid does not rely on things happening automatically; everything must come through effort and avodah. This is why there must also be an active effect of milah.

May Hashem grant each one of us success in all our matters and actions to fulfill these three things—turning from evil and doing good—and to be a servant of Hashem in a constant state.

With blessings for proper health and long good years with all interpretations—for him and his wife.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true fulfillment of milah involves both avoiding negative traits and actively pursuing good through personal effort. Every aspect requires conscious avodah—not relying on automatic outcomes—to serve Hashem continuously.
