B"H, 16 Elul, may the Almighty grant peace and blessing!

I received both of your letters without indication of their dates in due time, and due to many preoccupations my response was delayed until now.

As you describe your situation regarding your relationship with your second spouse, after presenting all your arguments and recounting the disputes between you, in my opinion these are matters without real foundation and are merely ordinary quarrels. Certainly among the causes is also the involvement of other people and issues of gossip and similar things.

Therefore, in my opinion, you should seek advice on how to bring your hearts closer together—yours to hers and hers to yours. If possible, it would be good for you to move so as not to live together with those who are suspected of being gossipers and exaggerators. Then one can hope that gradually you will draw closer to each other and the disputes will diminish until there will be peace and tranquility between you.

It is understood that according to our Sages' saying that a woman's tears are frequent, your words should be gentle so they will be more easily heard. A soft answer turns away wrath—even when there is a basis for anger—and especially in your case where there is no real basis but rather excitement leading to mere words.

Our Sages said: "A second marriage is according to one's deeds." Beyond its simple meaning, this teaches us that the relationship between spouses depends even more on their actions than in a first marriage, since fundamentally this union is made according to one's deeds.

I am enclosing here the booklet for Chai Elul. See at the end of the discourse "Lecha Amar Libi," as quoted there from Likkutei Torah: In the month of Elul we meet the King in the field. It is known that "field" means a place not settled by man; within every person there is an aspect of city, field, and desert. In the field anyone who wishes may go out to greet the King, Who receives everyone graciously and shows a smiling face to all.

With an awakening from below comes an awakening from Above—especially in Elul (whose initials spell Ani LeDodi VeDodi Li—"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine"). This must also be reflected in our conduct toward those around us: whoever draws near should be received graciously with a smiling face—even if it seems (or even if there is reason) that one's fellow is a "man of the field." Just as Elul is an auspicious time for such conduct between G‑d and Israel (as explained in Zohar I:38a), so too it is an auspicious time for such conduct between people—between friends and between husband and wife.

Certainly you have fixed times for studying the teachings of my revered father-in-law, which is a broad vessel for drawing down his blessings both materially and spiritually.

As you requested I will mention you—yourself, your wife, and your family—at the resting place of my revered father-in-law. The righteous who have passed on are found in this world even more than during their lifetime; surely he will bestow his blessing for all that you need, and may G‑d fulfill his blessings completely.

I conclude with blessings for being inscribed and sealed for good. I await good news—that there will be peace and tranquility in your home—for peace is the vessel that holds blessing in this world.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that marital harmony requires patience, gentle speech, distancing from negative influences, spiritual effort during auspicious times like Elul, and turning toward each other with kindness—especially important in a second marriage where actions matter greatly.
