Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"m etc. Rabbi Avraham Friedman
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 7th of Elul:
a) Regarding what you wrote about the inverted yud that is written in the letter tzadi, and your request for a halachic clarification on this matter: many have already discussed it extensively and gathered opinions—see Mishnas Avraham sec. 23 subsec. 86–88, Meir Einei Sofrim sec. 7, Maasef Lechol HaMachanos sec. 36; see there.
b) Regarding practical application in tefillin: I am surprised if there is anyone in our generation so "orphaned" who would dare to actually disagree with the Arizal, who ruled to write an inverted yud in tefillin. I can bring reliable witnesses that this is indeed the view of the Arizal—namely Mishnas Chassidim and Sefer Tikkun Tefillin ch. 1 law 10, Matzas Shemurim, etc., and last but not least Admor Hazaken. The words of the Arizal have been brought as halachah by several poskim and in Shulchan Aruch Admor Hazaken sec. 36.
c) Regarding practical application in a Sefer Torah: The above ruling for tefillin demonstrates that an inverted yud forms part of the shape of the letter tzadi. Since this change is not mentioned in Shas (the Talmud), according to the well-known responsum of Noda B'Yehuda it is obvious that such a tzadi is kosher everywhere—including in a Sefer Torah.
d) As for how one should ideally write in a Sefer Torah: you already quoted in your letter a letter from my father-in-law, Admor Hakadosh (of blessed memory), that our custom is also to write an inverted yud in a Sefer Torah. See also Mishnas Avraham there—that he saw this practice in Sifrei Torah written by great experts over several generations and from expert scribes of his own era; only recently have some begun to change it (which does not follow Shut Sheiv Moshe Yoreh Deah sec. 51 who holds that one should ideally write a straight yud).
e) What is the opinion of the Gra (Vilna Gaon) on this? You quote from Sefer Tosafes Maaseh Rav that the Gra invalidated "tzaddikim bent backwards," saying there was an error regarding what was written about the Arizal's practice. I do not have this sefer at hand. But where is an inverted yud hinted at in these words? However, in Sefer Ksav L'Chaim by sofer Reb Avraham Chaim of Minsk (Vilna 1858), he writes that he heard from Reb Elazar Moshe of Monastyrshchina quoting the Gra that the correct reading in Zohar III (2b) is 'le'astakhra' not 'le'achorei.' The author concludes that we rule according to Bach, Beis Yosef, and Gra z"l for practical halachah. Clearly it is very weak grounds to establish from this that Gra's view opposes that of Arizal—especially since even this correction in Zohar does not fit well at all; because Zohar continues: 'and their faces did not turn face-to-face... destined to be turned face-to-face,' which shows clearly that initially it was back-to-back (i.e., behind), not 'le'astakhra.'
f) The form of tzadi is mentioned in Chassidus as recorded at the beginning of Likkutei Torah's explanation on "Dechalzu" (and there too quotes Zohar's wording 'le'achorei'), as well as in maamar "Neteh Es Yadcha," 5663.
g) Thank you for your comment regarding Shabbat blessings; I have already been informed by several Polish chassidim that everywhere in Galicia etc., they use this name.
h) Also thank you for your suggestion about arranging a place within our camp or similar so anyone who wishes can find Chassidus books to study on site; if everyone on site would choose by majority opinion a specific place and inform me about it, we would send books there from all our publications.
i) Enclosed is the publication for Chai Elul just now released, along with a letter sent with it.
j) As per your request I will mention you and your family at the gravesite of my father-in-law Admor Hakadosh (of blessed memory). With blessings for being inscribed and sealed for good.
