My mechutan the vavac"h iy"a nu"m etc. Moreinu HaRav N. shiy" — Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter in its time, and for understandable reasons it was difficult for me to respond, even regarding the consolation of mourners you mentioned.

It is stated by Rabbeinu Yonah (chapter 3) that comforting mourners is a Torah commandment, and that mourners themselves comfort one another. At first glance this is puzzling: how can one mourner comfort another when he himself is in mourning? But the very act of showing the mourner that he is not alone in his pain—that there are others who wish to comfort him but cannot find words due to the depth of their own sorrow—this itself is a form of comfort.

It is well known what the Alter Rebbe writes in his letter of consolation: that the soul of one who has passed away truly remains among us; indeed, it is found in this world even more than during its lifetime, and we receive this through connecting ourselves to his ways.

The inner point of his ways was that each person should participate in his own service, intertwined and united through love of Hashem, love of Torah, and love of Israel.

I am confident that you too will continue along this path with increased strength and vigor, for this is what the times demand.

Enclosed is a booklet for Pesach which has just been published.

I will conclude with wishes for a kosher and joyous Pesach festival.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that sharing grief with others brings true comfort and unity. By continuing in paths of love for Hashem, Torah, and fellow Jews—even amidst sorrow—we strengthen ourselves and our communities.
