Mr. Baruch Litvin sheyichyeh
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter with the question about how one studies Tanya in a way that allows one to "digest it." You do not clarify exactly what you mean by "digest"—I assume you simply mean to understand it. However, since there is a perception that Chassidus in general and Tanya in particular are especially difficult and almost incomprehensible subjects, you refer to understanding them as "digesting." I must clarify from the outset that Tanya and Chassidus are, like other parts of Torah, accessible to anyone who truly wishes to study and understand them. At the same time, they possess a depth such that even the greatest scholar in Chassidus cannot say he has already "grasped" everything. In this way too they are similar to other parts of Torah.
The proof of this is that new maamarim (discourses) and books continue to appear which, based on Torah principles, reveal new insights and explain ever more deeply and broadly what was previously said. The reason for these two aforementioned qualities of Torah in general and Chassidus in particular—simplicity and infinite depth—which seem at first glance to be opposites, is because they are the wisdom of the Holy One Blessed be He. Thus regarding the Almighty: a) simple people also know Him; b) even the greatest sage engaged in Divine wisdom cannot fully comprehend Him. The same applies to Torah, for "Torah and the Holy One Blessed be He are entirely one."
Regarding the order of study for Tanya and Chabad Chassidus—you do not write in your letter what you have already learned or if you are just beginning. If as a beginning—it seems to me (as much as can be said without seeing you in person) that the order should be: Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah, Iggeres HaTeshuvah, then Tanya Part One. The first time learning it should not involve stopping at individual words or terms—even if they are not entirely clear—as long as you understand the general idea of each chapter. To help understand each chapter's general theme in Tanya Part One, the summaries by tzt"z (printed by Kehot) are very helpful.
After learning this way for the first time—and if from time to time you also learn maamarim from Sefer HaMaamarim—I think you will certainly be able to learn Tanya more thoroughly and focus more specifically on each chapter's topics.
Of course, if you have questions about any of the above or about studying Chassidus in general, and you think I can help with this, please write me privately—in whatever language is easiest for you—and I will answer what I know on this subject.
I only want to clarify from the outset that if my answer relates to my work at Merkaz L’Inyanei Chinuch or similar matters, there should be no resentment because of it.
I hope to hear good news from you regarding your progress in learning Tanya and Chassidus. I conclude with blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach.
Summary
Tanya is both accessible for all who wish to learn sincerely and endlessly deep even for scholars. The Rebbe recommends starting with Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah and Iggeres HaTeshuvah before Part One of Tanya, focusing first on overall understanding rather than every detail.
