...ומסיים בפרשת היום, אמרז"ל (ב"מ פה, ב. ירושלמי חגיגה פ"א ה"ז) אשר חורבן בית ראשון אף שהי' ע"י עונות אבל אם היתה התורה חשובה בעיניהם הנה המאור שבתורה הי' מחזירם למוטב ולא הי' הבית חרב, ובית שני חרב משום שנאת חנם וכדאיתא ביומא (ט, ב).
ועתה בעקבתא דמשיחא אשר כמרז"ל (סנהדרין צז, ב) כלו כל הקצין ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בתשובה ומע"ט עלינו, על כל אחד ואחד במקום מגורו, להשתדל באהבת ישראל ובחביבות התורה והמצות ביתר שאת ויתר עז.
ושני דברים אלו מתקיימים בבת אחת כשמתעסקים בענינים של חזוק התורה והיהדות בין השדרות הכי רחבים של עם ישראל.
כי אין לך אהבה גדולה מזו כשמשתדל ביגיעת נפש ויגיעת בשר להציל את חבירו - כל ישראל חברים - מרדת שחת ע"י חטאים ועונות.
ואין לך לתורה חשיבות גדולה מזו כשמבאר ומסביר לכל אחד ואחד שהיא חכמתו ורצונו של הקב"ה, והיא נצחיות בכל זמן ובכל מקום, וגם חיי עולם - זה - נטע בתוכנו ע"י התורה ומצות.
וימהר השי"ת לגאלנו בקרוב ממש ע"י משיח צדקנו.

...And he concludes regarding the portion of the day, as our Sages said (Bava Metzia 85b; Yerushalmi Chagigah 1:7), that although the destruction of the First Temple was due to sins, if Torah had been precious in their eyes, the light within Torah would have brought them back to good, and the Temple would not have been destroyed. The Second Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred, as it is stated in Yoma (9b).
And now, in Ikvesa d'Meshicha (the footsteps of Mashiach), as our Sages said (Sanhedrin 97b), all deadlines have passed and the matter depends only on teshuvah and good deeds from us—each person in his place—so we must strive in Ahavas Yisrael and in cherishing Torah and mitzvos with extra strength and vigor.
These two things are fulfilled together when one is involved in strengthening Torah and Judaism among the broadest circles of the Jewish people. For there is no greater love than when one strives with soul and body to save his fellow—all Jews are friends—from falling into the pit through sins. And there is no greater honor for Torah than when one explains to everyone that it is the wisdom and will of the Holy One blessed be He, it is eternal at all times and places, and also 'eternal life'—this—He has planted within us through Torah and mitzvos.
May Hashem hasten our redemption very soon through our righteous Mashiach.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that by strengthening both Ahavas Yisrael and dedication to Torah among all Jews—especially through outreach—we fulfill both true love for others and honor for Torah. This combined effort brings us closer to redemption through teshuvah and good deeds.
