3 Tishrei

We begin with "Mizmor L'Dovid" and not with "L'chu neranenah," and likewise on every Shabbos following a Yom Tov.

The Haftorah: from "Shuvah" through "yikashlu vam"; from "Mi Kel kamocha" through "mimei kedem."

At the yechidus of the Tzemach Tzedek with the Alter Rebbe, on Monday of Parshas Ki Seitzei, the sixth of Elul 5564, the Alter Rebbe related to him: On Shabbos Parshas Tavo 5528 my teacher and master, the Maggid of Mezritch, said a Torah that began with the verse "V'shavta ad Havayah Elokecha." He explained that the avodah of teshuvah must reach the point where Havayah, which is above the worlds, becomes "Elokecha" — your G‑d; for "Elokim" has the numerical value of "hateva," nature, as in "Bereishis bara Elokim."

The entire chevraya kadisha were in great arousal from that Torah.

The tzaddik Reb Meshulam Zusya of Anipoli said that he could not attain such a level of teshuvah, and that he would therefore divide teshuvah into parts; for "teshuvah" is an acronym: tav — "Tamim tihyeh im Havayah Elokecha"; shin — "Shivisi Havayah l'negdi tamid"; vav — "V'ahavta l'rei'acha kamocha"; beis — "B'chol drachecha da'eihu"; hei — "Hatzneia leches im Havayah Elokecha."

When my father related the above to me, he concluded: The word "teshuvah" is composed of five letters, each of which is a path and a mode in the avodah of teshuvah — and he explained the five modes at length — and all of them are brought from potential into actuality through the avodah of tefillah.
