We are learning Parshas Nitzavim, Revi, beginning with Perek Lamed, Posuk Alef. In this shiur, we will go through the pesukim and their meaning, including the blessings and curses, the return to Hashem, the gathering of the exiles, and the promise of Hashem's mercy and goodness to the Jewish people. We will also discuss the deeper meanings that our teachers have learned from these verses, especially regarding Hashem's involvement with the Jewish people in exile and redemption.
The verse begins: "And it will be, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you, and you will consider in your heart among all the nations where Hashem, your God, has banished you." The teacher explains that this is talking about the time when the Jewish people experience both the blessings and the curses that were set before them. After these experiences, wherever they are among the nations, they will reflect and take to heart what has happened to them. This is the beginning of the process of return and repentance, as the people realize, even in exile, what has occurred and why.
The verse continues: "And you will return to Hashem, your God, and you will listen to His voice, according to everything that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul." The teacher translates and explains that after reflecting on their situation, the Jewish people will do teshuva, returning to Hashem and listening to His commandments. This return is not just superficial; it is with all their heart and soul, and it includes both the people themselves and their children. The emphasis is on a complete and heartfelt return to Hashem and His mitzvos.
The verse says: "Then Hashem, your God, will bring back your exiles and have mercy on you, and He will once again gather you from all the nations where Hashem, your God, has dispersed you." The teacher explains that after the Jewish people return to Hashem, Hashem will respond by gathering them from exile. He will have mercy on them and bring them back from all the places where they were scattered. The process is not just a physical return, but also a spiritual one, as Hashem's mercy is involved in bringing the people back together from among the nations.
The Rashi on "V'shov Hashem Elokecha es shevuscha" asks: It should have said, "Veheishiv es shevuscha"—He will return your exiles—but instead it says, "V'shov," He will return. The teacher explains that our teachers learned from here that the Divine Presence, as if to say, rests with the Jewish people in the troubles of their exile. When the Jewish people are redeemed, Hashem writes redemption for Himself as well, meaning that He returns together with them. The Possuk writes that Hashem returns with the Jewish people. Furthermore, the teacher adds, it is taught that the day of the gathering of the exiles is so great and difficult that it is as if Hashem Himself has to take each person by the hand and bring him back from his place. This is like the verse in Yeshaya: "And you will be collected one by one, sons of Israel." The teacher also notes that this applies not only to the exile of Bavel, but also to the exiles among other nations, as it says in Yirmiyahu and elsewhere: "I will return the captivity of Moav." This shows that Hashem's involvement in the redemption is direct and personal for each individual.
The verse says: "Even if your exiles are at the end of the heavens, from there Hashem, your God, will gather you, and from there He will take you." The teacher explains that no matter how far the Jewish people are scattered, even to the ends of the heavens, Hashem will gather them from there. There is no place too distant for Hashem to reach and bring back the Jewish people. The emphasis is on Hashem's ability and promise to gather every Jew, no matter where they are.
The verse continues: "And Hashem, your God, will bring you to the land that your fathers inherited, and you will take possession of it. He will do good to you and make you more numerous than your fathers." The teacher explains that after gathering the Jewish people from exile, Hashem will bring them back to Eretz Yisroel, the land that their ancestors inherited. The people will once again possess the land, and Hashem will do good for them, increasing them and making them even more numerous than their ancestors. This is a promise of both physical return and blessing in the land.
The verse says: "And Hashem, your God, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, to love Hashem, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, for the sake of your life." The teacher explains that Hashem will help the Jewish people and their children to have a pure heart, removing the barriers that prevent them from loving Hashem fully. This circumcision of the heart means that Hashem will enable them to love Him with all their heart and soul, so that they can truly live a life connected to Hashem. It is a promise of spiritual renewal and closeness to Hashem for the people and their descendants.
