In Chabad tradition, we refrain from even drinking water outside of the Sukkah on Shemini Atzeret. It is well known that in the year תשל"ח, (Shemini Atzeret began at sundown on Friday, September 30, 1977) when the Rebbe experienced a serious heart incident and they offered him some water to drink, he declined. Only, after a while, he went to the Sukkah and made kiddush there.
